(EN) Hike Table Mountain / (ES) Ascenso a Table Mountain

Like any other big day, this one is also going to start really early in the morning. Before 5 am we were already up and ready to climb one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the world. The spectacular Table Mountain.

Como todos los grandes días, este también empezó con un madrugón de los buenos. Antes de las 5 am ya estábamos en pie y dispuestos para subir a pie una de las 7 maravillas naturales del mundo. La increíble Table Mountain.

You shouldn't underestimate how dangerous climbing Table Mountain can be. Many people lost their lives in this area (due to storms, disorientation, etc.) and therefore we believe it is important to go up with an experienced person.

No hay que menospreciar la peligrosidad que supone subir a la Table Mountain. Son muchas las personas que han perdido la vida por la zona (debido a temporales, perdida de la orientación, etc.) y por este motivo pensamos que es muy importante el hacer la subida con una persona experimentada.

We were searching in internet and there are several agencies that offer guided hikes. After checking tripadvisor we found out there was one of them that was clearly standing out over the rest, the agency hiketablemountain. We contacted them per e-mail and the communication with Riaan was fast and fluent at all times.

Estuvimos indagando por internet y son varias las agencias que ofrecen guía para subir, pero tras revisar tripadvisor vimos que hay una de ellas que destaca muy por encima del resto, la agencia hiketablemountain. Contactamos con ella a través de email y la comunicación con Riaan fue rápida y fluida en todo momento.

We told them what kind of hike we would like to do and based on that he recommended us the hike India Venster. The choice couldn't have been better. This hike offers stunning panoramic views over the city, Signal Hill, Lion's Head and the 12 Apostles. It is not suitable for those afraid of heights and in some points it is very exigent, but with the help of the guide you should be fine. On the main website HIKETABLEMOUNTAIN you can find many other routes and see photos as well as descriptions about the difficulty and requirements for them. Choose any of them, you won't regret it!

Le comentamos qué tipo de hike nos gustaría hacer y en base a ello nos recomendó el hike India Venster. La elección no pudo ser más acertada. Este hike ofrece unas vistas panorámicas increíbles de la ciudad, Signal Hill, Lion's Head y los 12 apóstoles. No es apta para personas con vértigo y es en algunos tramos bastante exigente, pero para ello está la ayuda de un guía. En la misma página de HIKETABLEMOUNTAIN encontraréis más rutas, incluso podéis ver fotos así como una descripción sobre la dureza o requisitos de las mismas. Elegir la que queráis, no os arrepentiréis!

Well, let's go back to our day. As I said we were ready and went out at 5 am. That was the meeting time with our guide, our cheerful Hendré was on time there, as accurately as a Swiss watch. We didn't know it then, but Hendré was going to be one of the best guides we've ever had. She was so full of energy and made this day even more amazing.

Bueno, y ahora volviendo a nuestro día. Como comenté, a las 5 am ya en pie y saliendo por la puerta. A esa hora quedamos con la que sería nuestra guía y puntual como un reloj allí estaba nuestra querida Hendré. Nosotros aún no lo sabíamos, pero Hendré se iba a convertir en una de las mejores guías que jamás hayamos tenido. Es un auténtico torbellino de energía y nos hizo el día aún más increíble.

We headed in the car to the starting point of the hike. Some of us were bleary-eyed while Hendré was telling us funny stories. Once there some more people joined the group and the group was complete (we were in total 7 people) we started our way up.

Nos dirigimos en coche hacia el que sería el punto de inicio del hike. Algunos intentábamos quitarnos aun las legañas de los ojos mientras que Hendré no paraba de contar divertidas historias. Ya en el punto de inicio se nos unieron unas cuantas personas más y una vez el grupo completo (éramos un total de 7) iniciamos la ascensión.

The first part was for me the hardest one. It took us around 45 minutes to finish this very steep part. I was fighting to breathe, Alicia, can you guess what she was doing? She was taking pictures...Hendré, our talkative guide, was telling stories as if she was just taking a relaxing walk by the sea... How can she have so much energy!? Even if the ascending part was hard, the views were very rewarding. As we started very early we could see how the sun slowly appeared on the east to wake up a city still asleep. Just for moments like this one it is worth the effort, no matter how early you have to wake up.

El primer tramo fue para mi el más duro. Es una subida empinada que tardamos unos 45 minutos en hacer. Yo luchando por respirar, Alicia, lo adivináis? Haciendo fotos... Y Hendré, nuestra querida guía, contando historias como si estuviera dando un tranquilo paseo por la orilla del mar ... Qué energía tiene esa mujer! A pesar de que la subida es dura, las vistas recompensan. Al iniciar tan pronto la caminata, pudimos ir viendo como el sol aparecía desde el este para despertar a una ciudad que aún seguía dormida. Sólo por instantes así merece la pena el esfuerzo y el madrugón.

Right after the first part, one of the members of the group decided not to continue (I told you the way up was hard). The rest was, from my personal point of view, achievable. There were moments where you literally have to climb (no worries, no equipment is needed) but with the help and experience of Hendré everything was much easier. As we were ascending Hendré always made sure we could all keep up the group's pace and knew exactly where and when we needed to stop. About the photographs, don't even worry, you will have all the time in the world to take as many as you need, and your guide will reveal the best spots for the most amazing shots.

Una vez finalizado el primer tramo, y tras el abandono de una de las integrantes del grupo (ya os dije que la subida era dura) el resto era, desde mi punto de vista, algo más asequible. Había puntos en los que literalmente había que escalar (no os preocupéis, no hace falta ningún tipo de equipamiento especial) pero con la ayuda y experiencia de Hendré todo era mucho más sencillo. Durante el ascenso Hendré se preocupaba porque todos pudiésemos seguir el ritmo del grupo y sabía además cuándo y en qué punto hacer las paradas. Y por el tema de las fotos, ni os preocupéis, vais a tener todo el tiempo del mundo para hacer las que queráis y vuestra guía os desvelará los puntos para las mejores fotos.

We needed around 3.5 to 4 hours to make it to the famous summit. After achieving our goal, finally at the top we rested for a while, all of us amazed with the stunninng views. Going down was much easier, it is usually by cable car (only if the weather conditions don't allow it, you will have to go down on foot). At around 11 am we were already on our way back. We had achieved one of our goals of this trip to South Africa. And the best part of it: we still had the whole day ahead of us!

Fueron unas 3,5-4 horas las que necesitamos para llegar a la famosa cima. Una vez arriba y tras conseguir el objetivo, estuvimos un buen rato descansando y quedándonos embobados con las vistas. El descenso fue más sencillo, ya que se realiza en el teleférico (si las condiciones climatológicas no lo permiten, se debe bajar a pie). Sobre las 11 am estábamos ya de vuelta habiendo cumplido uno de los objetivos de nuestro viaje a Sudáfrica. Y lo mejor de todo, aún nos quedaba todo el día por delante!

PS: We absolutely recommend you to do one of the hikes to make it to the top of Table Mountain. This is a unique experience that any traveler going to Cape Town should do.
