(EN) Roadtrip through Switzerland / (ES) Viaje en coche por Suiza

Here we are, in Switzerland, a country full of beautiful landscapes. We used the Easter holidays in 2017 to fly to Geneva and fly back from Zurich. We visited the French-speaking area first and ended in the German-speaking portion of this beautiful country. We couldn't have chosen a better time of the year to visit, SPRING!!! It was like looking at a postcard book the whole time we were there.

Aquí estamos, en Suiza, un país lleno de paisajes preciosos. Usamos el puente de Semana Santa de 2017 para volar a Ginebra y volar de vuelta desde Zúrich. Pasamos primero por la zona francófona y acabamos en la zona alemana de este precioso país. No pudimos elegir una mejor época del año para visitarlo, PRIMAVERA!!! Era como mirar un libro de postales constantemente.

If you wonder how is it possible to travel so much with a regular job: just try to avoid using vacation days for short trips! We went to work on Thrusday with our baggage ready in the car (Friday and Monday were public holidays). We started at work early on Thursday to leave the office early as well. Right after work, we drove to the airport and arrived in Geneva at night. We walked all the way to the hotel, we didn't want to find out just yet how expensive Switzerland can be, so we avoided taking a taxi. It was hard to find but we finally got there!

Si te preguntas cómo es posible viajar tanto teniendo un trabajo corriente: simplemente evita usar días de vacaciones para los viajes cortos! Fuimos al trabajo el jueves con nuestro equipaje preparado en el coche (el viernes y el lunes eran festivos). Entramos muy temprano para poder salir lo antes posible. Nada más salir del trabajo fuimos directos al aeropuerto y llegamos a Ginebra por la noche. Caminamos hasta el hotel, no queríamos descubrir tan pronto lo caro que puede ser Suiza, así que evitamos tomar un taxi. Fue difícil de encontrar pero al fin llegamos!

1st Day: Geneva - Interlaken/ 1er día: Ginebra - Interlaken

We woke up very early to pick up the car we rented at the airport. This time we took a bus instead of walking, it wasn't that close... We didn't visit Geneva at all in order to visit more small towns on our way through the Grand Tour of Switzerland or also known as the Route Suisse. This route leads you to the cutest towns and most incredible views along the way to your next destination. This country is absolutely stunning and our first day was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for photographs! So as you can imagine, I was totally excited taking photos all the time, sometimes maybe too many, being even annoying for Julio... I can't help it! =)

Nos levantamos muy temprano para recoger el coche de alquiler en el aeropuerto. Esta vez cogemos un autobús en vez de andar, no estaba tan cerca como para repetir. No visitamos Ginebra para poder ver más pueblecitos por el camino a lo largo de la Gran Ruta Suiza, o también conocida como el Gran Tour de Suiza. Esta ruta te conduce por los pueblos más bonitos y las vistas más increíbles hasta llegar a tu próximo destino. Este país es absolutamente impresionante y nuestro primer día fue un precioso día soleado, perfecto para hacer fotos! Así que como es de esperar, me volví loca tomando fotos sin parar, a veces incluso demasiadas, siendo hasta molesto para Julio... pero no puedo evitarlo! =)

Coppet, Nyon, Lausanne, Vevey, Chillon Castle, Spiez

In Coppet we took our first Grand Tour photo with the Lake Leman behind. This cute little town is not a must, but all about it was very surprising: the stunning views of the Leman Lake, the little cute Cafes and Chocolateries, the colorful flowers hanging off the walls outside the houses... the vibrant colors, the beautiful blue sky on a sunny day... I know, a blue sky might not sound as surprising to you as it sounds to me (not typical at all for someone from Spain ), but after 4 years in Germany you stop taking the good weather for granted and get to appreciate it more than ever.

En Coppet hicimos la primera foto con el cartel del Gran Tour y el lago Leman de fondo. Este bonito pueblo no es de visita obligatoria, pero todo me resultó muy sorprendente: las vistas tan impresionantes del lago Leman, los pequeños Cafés y Chocolaterías con tanto encanto, el colorido de las flores colgando de las pareces en las casas... los colores vibrantes, el cielo azul en un día soleado... Sí, puede que un cielo azul pueda sonar poco sorprendente (especialmente si vienes de un país con un clima como el de España), pero después de 4 años en Alemania dejas de dar por hecho el buen tiempo y aprecias más que nunca un bonito día de sol.

We drove by the Lake through vineyards until we arrived to Nyon. We parked very close to the Lake and could easily see where the city center was. We headed to the castle to enjoy the views, the sky is so clear today we can see the beautiful mountains behind the lake. This city was part of the Roman Empire once, conquered by the Bernese. The castle is a good example of the Bernese architecture. You can do one more historical visit here and take the Toblerone Trail to see the tank traps used during the World War II. The name of Toblerone trail is due to the shape of the traps, it is very similar to the well-known swiss chocolate bar.

Fuimos conduciendo junto al lago, a través de viñedos hasta llegar a Nyon. Aparcamos muy cerca del lago y vimos enseguida donde se localiza el centro. Nos dirigimos al castillo para disfrutar de las vistas, el cielo está totalmente despejado y se ven las montañas espectaculares de fondo al otro lado del lago. Esta ciudad formó parte del Imperio Romano y fue más tarde conquistada por los Berneses. El castillo es un buen ejemplo de la arquitectura bernesa. Hay otra visita histórica que se puede hacer aquí, puedes hacer el Toblerone Trail para ver las trampas de los tanques usados durante la II Guerra Mundial. El nombre de Toblerone Trail se debe a la similitud de la forma de estas trampas al famoso chocolate suizo.

Lausanne is a beautiful city, but we find more insteresting the smaller villages, in my opinion they have more personality. However, this city is definetely worth the vist: walk up to the castle to enjoy the views, walk around and look for a place to eat. We ended up eating at McDonald's due to our reduced budget, everything is extremely expensive... even McDonald's! What in Spain or in Germany costs usually €6-7 in Switzerland costs €15 (that is the cheapest lunch you can find). Lucky for us we didn't have to pay for parking in the French area of the country, Friday was a public holiday and it's free on the weekends!.​

Lausana es una ciudad muy bonita, pero para mí son más interesantes los pueblos pequeños por tener más personalidad. Sin embargo pensamos que merece la pena visitar esta ciudad y visitar el castillo para disfrutar de las vistas, pasear y buscar un lugar para comer. Acabamos comiendo en el McDonald's dado nuestro presupuesto, todo nos pareció MUY caro... incluso el McDonald's! Lo que en Alemania o en España cuesta 6-7€ en Suiza cuesta 15€ (este es el precio de la comida más barata que encontramos). Por suerte, no tuvimos que pagar nada por aparcar en toda la parte francesa ya que el viernes era festivo y los fines de semana es gratis!.

Vevey is located by the Leman Lake as well. I heard a lot about this city, my sister lived there for 3 years, but I didn't expect it to be that beautiful. There were people walking by the Leman Lake and some people where even in it! We saw people sitting on paddle boats or kayaking and even doing paddle surf. I guess everyone was as excited as I was about the weather, it was a big surprise to have such good weather in April!

Vevey está también situado junto al lago Leman. Había escuchado mucho sobre esta ciudad ya que mi hermana vivió aquí durante 3 años, pero no esperaba que fuese tan bonito. Había mucho ambiente, mucha gente caminaba por la orilla del lago Leman, incluso había gente dentro de él! Vimos a gente en barcos de pedales o haciendo kayak, e incluso haciendo paddle surf. Supongo que estaban todos tan encantados con el tiempo como yo. Nunca pensé que tendríamos tan buen tiempo en Abril!

Montreux was unfortunately too full, we couldn't park anywhere. Apparently there was a festival, but we wouldn't miss Chillon Castle! We parked there and walked around. After that we continued our route and stopped shortly at Spiez, a cute town by the Thun lake to look for the best views of mountain Niesen. Our next stop: Interlaken, where we ate dinner and went to sleep.

Montreaux estaba por desgracia demasiado lleno, no pudimos aparcar en ninguna parte. Parece ser que había un festival, pero no nos íbamos a perder el castillo Chillon! Aparcamos allí y paseamos por los alrededores. Después continuamos nuestra ruta y paramos brevemente en Spiez, un pequeño pueblo muy bonito junto al lago Thun, en busca de las mejores vistas de la montaña Niesen. Nuestra próxima parada: Interlaken, donde llegamos a cenar y nos fuimos a la cama.

2nd Day: Interlaken - Lucerne/ 2º día: Interlaken - Lucerna

Interlaken

We stayed at Balmer's Guesthouse, outside of Interlaken, the city center is too expensive for our budget. I loved the decoration of the three houses which integrate the Hostel. Very original but not as cheap as we wished for backpackers!

Nos quedamos en Balmer's Guesthouse, a las afueras de Interlaken, el centro es demasiado caro para nuestro presupuesto. Me encantó la decoración de las tres casas que componen el hostal, muy original pero algo caro para mochileros!

Interlaken is such an amazing city, we used the whole morning to visit as much as possible. While we were driving down town, we kept seeing people parachuting and I thought they were going to crush against a building, until we found the landing area. I loved watching them land safely. It must be an unforgettable experience with spectacular views. Even if the price wasn't as high as I expected in Switzerland, I am not brave enough to do such a thing... But if I dare someday, this is the place I'd do it for sure!

Interlaken es una ciudad increíble, utilizamos la mañana completa para visitar todo lo posible. Mientras conducíamos hacia la ciudad no parábamos de ver gente cayendo en paracaídas. Pensamos que se iban a chocar contra alguno de los edificios hasta que encontramos el área de aterrizaje, en pleno centro. Me encantó verles aterrizar sin problemas. Debe ser una experiencia inolvidable con vistas espectaculares. Aunque el precio no era tan alto como cabe esperar en Suiza, yo no me atrevería a hacer algo así... Pero si algún día me animo, que no lo descarto, este será el sitio sin duda!

Oberhofen

After a 30-minute drive by the Thun lake, this time driving on the other side of the lake, we arrive to Oberhofen. We actually wanted to drive directly to Bern to visit the city, but I saw the cute castle and convinced Julio to take a look. By the lake you can take some nice pictures of the castle and the views of the town as well, with all the little houses located up in the mountain looking towards the lake.

Después de 30 minutos en coche por el lago Thun, esta vez conduciendo al otro lado del lago, llegamos a Oberhofen. En realidad queríamos conducir directos a Berna para visitar la ciudad, pero al ver el castillo tan bonito, convencí a Julio para echar un breve vistazo. Junto al lago se pueden hacer fotos muy bonitas tanto del castillo como del pueblo, con todas sus casitas de cuento colocadas en la montaña, todas ellas mirando al lago.

Gruyères is also a nice place to stop at to see another castle on the way to Bern. We see this pretty place from the road but the weather wasn't the best to stop and decided to continue driving.

Gruyères es otra parada recomendable con otro bonito castillo de camino a Berna. Nosotros lo vemos desde la carretera, ya que el clima tampoco acompaña a parar, y decidimos seguir conduciendo.

Bern / Berna

Bern is our next destination! The day turns quite grey but the rain won't stop us from doing some walking. We stop to get something to eat, nothing fancy: we eat lunch sitting on the stairs under arcades in Bern. It finally stops raining and we continue walking around the city. This time we stop and stare at the magnificent views from Bern Minster (in German "Bern Münster"), pretty views even on a grey day. A funny fact about this Cathedral is that is the tallest religious building in the entire country.

Berna es nuestro siguiente destino! El día se torna gris pero la lluvia no nos va a frenar, pensamos recorrernosla con lluvia o sin ella. Paramos a comer algo, nada de lujos: un panecillo sentados en un escalón dentro de un soportal, y deja de llover al fin! Paramos a disfrutar las magníficas vistas desde la Catedral de Berna (en alemán "Bern Münster"), bonitas incluso en un día gris. Un dato interesante es que esta Catedral es el edificio religioso más alto de todo Suiza.

Lucerne/ Lucerna

We arrive in the evening but can't help it to take a quick look around. We find a parking spot and walk around the city center to enjoy the colors of the sunset. Hoever, it is the following morning when we explore the city and enjoy the ancient architecture. For those in love with places with history don't miss out on Lucern, where you can cross the oldest covered bridge in Europe, the Chapel Bridge. This bridge was originally built in the XIV century and from it you can see one of the symbols of the city, the Water Tower. We walk through the bridge and around the city before we get back on the road.

Llegamos por la tarde, pero no podemos evitar salir aunque sea a dar una vuelta. Encontramos un aparcamiento y paseamos por el centro de la ciudad para disfrutar de los colores del atardecer. Sin embargo, es ya al día siguiente cuando exploramos más a fondo la ciudad y disfrutamos de su arquitectura medieval tan bien conservada. Para los enamorados de lugares con historia no os podéis perder esta ciudad, donde podrás cruzar el puente cubierto más antiguo de Europa, el Puente de la Capilla. Este puente fue construido originalmente en el siglo XIV y desde él se puede ver uno de los símbolos de la ciudad, la Torre del Agua. Paseamos por el puente y por la ciudad antes de volvernos a la carretera.

3rd Day: Lucerne - Zurich/3º día: Lucerna - Zurich

On our way to Zurich the weather is not the best, so we just stop at a couple of places, Altdorf and Schwyz. We also stop several times along the road, no doubt there must be some amazing views on a sunny day, but today we can't see much. When we arrive to Zurich is quite grey but is not raining, so we continue walking around the last Swiss city of the trip.

De camino a Zúrich el tiempo no acompaña, por lo que solo paramos en dos lugares, Altdorf y Schwyz. Paramos también en varios puntos de la carretera, sin duda deben ser impresionantes las vistas en un día soleado, pero hoy a penas podemos ver nada. Cuando llegamos a Zúrich el día está gris pero sin lluvia, así que seguimos recorriendo la que será la última ciudad Suiza del viaje.

We were both absolutely amazed and fell in love with this country. People are kind, welcoming and always willing to help. The landscapes were undescriptible, even what you see in the photos are not even close to the beauty you get to see in person. I highly recommend visiting this country and can't wait to go back to visit the rest soon!

Nos quedamos totalmente boquiabiertos y nos enamoramos de este país. La gente es amable, acogedora y siempre dispuesta a ayudar. Los paisajes son indescriptibles, incluso los que veis en las fotos ni se acercan a lo bonitos que son realmente en persona. Sin duda recomiendo a cualquiera visitar este país y me muero de ganas de volver a visitar el resto pronto!
