(EN) W Trek, Torres del Paine / (ES) Circuito de la W, Torres del Paine

Tonight we will be spending the night at the Airport in Santiago de Chile, due to our early flight to Punta Arenas, at 6 am. After finding a quite place to try to get some rest, we put some chairs together and lie on them, using our own backpacks as pillows. In a few hours we arrive to Punta Arenas, in southern Chile, far south. We had never been to such a low latitude before.

Hoy nos toca pasar la noche en el aeropuerto de Santiago de Chile ya que salimos hacia Punta Arenas a las 6 am. Tras encontrar un buen rincón en el que intentar descansar, juntamos algunas filas de sillas y nos tumbamos sobre ellas, utilizando nuestras mochilas como almohada. Después de unas horas de vuelo llegamos a Punta Arenas, al sur de Chile, muy al sur. Nunca antes habíamos estado en una latitud tan baja.

Once at Punta Arenas Airport we have to wait a couple of hours for our bus, which will take us to Puerto Natales. Fortunately while waiting we get to know other travelers from around the globe. We meet a couple from Greece/France, who will make this journey even more interesting and fun! At Puerto Natales we need to take another bus to take us to the National Park Torres del Paine, in the heart of the Chilean Patagonia.

Una vez en el aeropuerto de Punta Arenas nos toca esperar un par de horas al autobús que nos va a dejar en Puerto Natales. Por suerte durante la espera conocemos a viajeros de todas partes del mundo. Empezamos a hablar con una pareja de Grecia/Francia, quienes harán que este viaje sea aun más interesante y divertido! En Puerto Natales debemos coger un nuevo autobús que nos deje en el parque nacional Torres del Paine, en pleno corazón de la Patagonia Chilena.

After many hours of traveling and a few hours of sleep, we arrive to the National Park Torres del Paine. The landscapes until this point where spectacular. We do the check in at our first Shelter, Shelter Torre central. Here we will eat diner with a nice American couple and spend our first night. The following day we will start the famous W Trek, named after the W shape this circuit draws on the map. The duration is usually 5 days.

Tras muchas horas de viaje y pocas horas de sueño llegamos al parque nacional Torres del Paine. Los paisajes hasta llegar aquí han sido espectaculares. Nos registramos en el que será nuestro primer refugio, el refugio torre central. Aquí cenaremos con una simpática pareja americana y pasaremos nuestra primera noche antes de iniciar al día siguiente el famoso circuito de la W. Recibe este nombre porque el circuito que describe tiene forma de W. Su duración suele ser de 5 días.

Day 1: Shelter Torre Central - Shelter El Chileno /Dia 1: Refugio Torre Central – Refugio El Chileno

We wake up very early and enjoy the breakfast given at the shelter. You have to count on the pricy meals, in Patagonia everything is more expensive. We start to walk carrying our backpacks and covered as if it was -20ºC/-4ºF outside... couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, it is cold, but nothing unbearable. We keep taking off clothes and we realize that the W Trek won't be a bed of roses. But we will make it!

Nos levantamos muy temprano y aprovechamos el desayuno que el refugio ofrece. Hay que tener en cuenta que estamos en la Patagonia, y que por lo tanto, todo es mucho más caro. Comenzamos a caminar con nuestra mochila a cuestas y abrigados como si a -20ºC estuviéramos…. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Hace fresco, si, pero nada que no se pueda soportar. Nos vamos quitando capas y empezamos a notar que el circuito de la W no va a ser un camino de rosas. Pero lo vamos a conseguir!

Around 3 hours later covered in sweat we arrive to the Shelter el Chileno. We check in our room, leave our backpacks and start walking up the hill to get to the famous Torres del Paine. Ascending is not easy, especially at the end of the hike, where practically there is no path... Instead there is a bunch of huge rocks we need to avoid or climb the best way we can. But it richly rewards the effort after 2 hours as we make it to the top!

Unas 3 horas de caminata después envueltos en sudor llegamos al refugio el chileno. Nos registramos en la habitación, dejamos nuestra mochila e iniciamos la subida hasta las famosas torres del paine. La subida no es fácil, especialmente en su tramo final, donde prácticamente no hay camino… Sino un montón de piedras enormes acumuladas que debemos sortear y escalar como buenamente podamos. Pero el esfuerzo tuvo su recompensa y tras unas 2 horas lo conseguimos!

At the time we got to the magnificent towers they were covered with clouds. But we didn't go up there to only see a part of them, so we waited. It was a jerring day. It was raining. Lucky for us we could shelter under a rock to eat, where by the way, we were accompanied by a small fox. After almost 4 hours waiting we could finally see the towers completely! It was worth the wait. Now it's time to get back to the shelter el Chileno to get some rest.

Al llegar las magníficas torres estaban tapadas por las nubes. Pero no habíamos subido hasta ahí para irnos sin verlas por completo, así que esperamos. El día era desapacible. Llovía. Suerte que pudimos resguardarnos bajo una piedra para poder comer, donde por cierto, tuvimos la compañía de un pequeño zorro. Después de casi 4 horas esperando conseguimos ver las torres en su totalidad! Mereció la pena la espera. Ahora volveremos al refugio el Chileno para descansar.

Day 2: Shelter El Chileno - Chelter Los Cuernos/ Día 2: Refugio El Chileno – Refugio Los Cuernos

During breakfast, surrounded by travelers also doing the trek, the day delightes us with one of the most beautiful rainbows we've ever seen. Right after that we take our backpacks and start the hike. Today looks much easier than yesterday... and so it was. The route is not as difficult and there are barely slopes. The landscapes are out of this world. Before we knew it we were at the shelter Los Cuernos, our "house" for the second night.

Mientras desayunábamos junto a un grupo de viajeros que también estaban realizando el trekking, el día nos regaló uno de los arco iris más bonitos que hayamos visto. Al acabar el desayuno recogemos nuestra mochila e iniciamos la nueva caminata. El día de hoy se presentaba como mucho más sencillo, y así fue. La ruta entrañaba menos dificultad y apenas había pendientes que subir. Los paisajes, eso sí, de otro mundo. Y así, casi sin darnos cuenta, llegamos al refugio los Cuernos, que sería nuestra ‘casa’ para este segundo día.

Day 3: Shelter Los Cuernos - Shelter Paine Grande/ Dia 3: Refugio Los Cuernos – Refugio Paine Grande

Today starts the real challenge. We had ahead of us the hardest hike of all on this trek. We start really early to use as many hours of light as possible. Without too much effort we get to the Italian camp, where we leave our backpacks to start our way up to the French lookout and later to the British lookout.

Llega el día de la verdad. Teníamos por delante la caminata más dura de todas. Salimos bien temprano para aprovechar las horas de luz. Sin demasiado esfuerzo llegamos al campamento italiano, en el que vamos a dejar la mochila para comenzar la ascensión hacia el mirador francés y luego al mirador británico.

The climb is exhausting, but absolutely worth the views. While ascending we hear snow avalanches and we can even see them. Impressive. After a lot of effort we get to the famous lookouts, each one with more amazing views than the previous one. We take this moment to eat and start going down. Once we get to the Italian camp we pick up our backpacks. At this point we are completely exhausted and we still have 7 km/ 4,5 miles to get to the Shelter Paine Grande. These 7 km/4,5 miles are not hard at all, actually they are pretty easy, but we are worn out. It took us around 3 hours to get there. No need to say we had to stop several times to rest on the way.

La subida es agotadora, pero merece la pena. Durante la ascensión se escuchan avalanchas de nieve e incluso pueden verse. Impresionante. Tras mucho esfuerzo vamos llegando a los famosos miradores, a cada cual mas espectacular. Aprovechamos para comer y comenzamos la bajada. Una vez llegamos al campamento italiano recogemos nuestras mochilas. En este punto del día estamos completamente agotados, y aún nos quedan 7 km por delante hasta llegar al Refugio Paine Grande. Estos 7 km restantes no son difíciles, de hecho, son bastante asequibles, pero el cansancio acumulado se hace notar. Tardamos como unas 3 horas para terminar estos 7 km. Ni que decir tiene que tuvimos que hacer varias paradas por el camino.

At the end of the hike I left Alicia behind, I see her far away fighting against the patagonian wind to avoid falling on the ground. If I still had energy, I would've laughed LOL. Right when I get to the shelter I drop my bag and go straight to get a coke. I need sugar. The best coke I'ver ever drunk! Now that I am drinking it and sitting down, I do laugh looking at Alicia on the horizon, she is still fighting against the wind.

En el tramo final voy dejando atrás a Alicia, a la que veo desde la lejanía como lucha contra el viento patagónico para que no la tire al suelo. Si hubiera tenido fuerzas, me habría reído xD. Tal y como llego al refugio tiro la mochila al suelo y me voy derecho a por una coca cola. Necesitaba azúcar. ¡La mejor coca cola de mi vida! Mientras me la tomo, ahora si, me río al ver a Alicia en el horizonte como sigue luchando contra el viento.

Day 4: Shelter Paine Grande - Shelter Grey/ Dia 4: Refugio Paine Grande – Refugio Grey

We take our time to eat breakfast and start our way to the last shelter of the circuit. The hike is nice, apart from some difficult areas of the path today is quite easy. We get to shelter Grey at noon and we eat there with friends we made during the trek. In the afternoon we look for panoramic views of the glacier Grey with our friends, the glacier we will be visiting tomorrow.

Desayunamos tranquilamente y ponemos rumbo al que será el último refugio de nuestro circuito. La caminata es agradable y salvo un par de tramos, no supone demasiada dificultad. Llegamos al Refugio Grey a mediodía y comemos allí junto a algunos compañeros de caminata. Por la tarde aprovechamos para buscar unas vistas panorámicas del glaciar Grey con estos compañeros, glaciar que por cierto vamos a visitar a fondo al día siguiente.

Day 5: Grey Glacier Trek/ Dia 5: Trekking por el Glaciar Grey

Today a beautiful day awaits. Luckily the day starts with a clear sky, which is going to make the adventure even better. We start very early getting on a motorboat, which will take us to an island where the Grey glacier is born. We are accompained by a great guide and with some of the people we met along the trek in the past 4 days. Once on the island we start the hike that leads us to the glacier. Just before stepping on it, the guide helped us put on the crampons to be able to walk on the glacier.

Hoy nos espera un día muy bonito. Además amanece con cielos despejados, lo cuál va a hacer que nuestra aventura sea aún más impresionante. Iniciamos el día bien temprano montándonos en una lancha motora que nos va a llevar hacia la isla en la que nace el glaciar Grey. Vamos acompañados de un magnífico guía y de algunos de los compañeros de viaje que hemos conocido durante estos días. Al llegar a la isla iniciamos la caminata que nos llevará hasta el inicio del glaciar. Poco antes de pisar este, el guía nos ayuda a colocarnos los crampones para poder movernos sobre el glaciar.

We are on the glacier! Once we are here our guide shows us different formations, he explains how the glacier was originated and how is evolving... He even finds time to teach a Greek couple how to dance salsa! After walking around the glacier for several hours we get back to the island where the motorboat is waiting for us to take us back to the starting point.

Ya estamos sobre el glaciar! Una vez aquí el guía nos muestra diferentes formaciones, nos habla sobre cómo se originó el glaciar, como está evolucionando… Incluso tiene tiempo para enseñar a una pareja de griegos cómo bailar salsa! Tras caminar por el glaciar durante varias horas volvemos a la isla donde la lancha motora nos espera para llevarnos de vuelta al punto de inicio.

Day 6: Shelter Grey - Puerto Natales/ Día 6: Refugio Grey – Puerto Natales

Unfortunately our Patagonian adventure is coming to an end. We get up before the sunrise and start our way back to the shelter Paine Grande. Here is the meeting point to go back to the civilization on a catamaran.

Desafortunadamente nuestra aventura patagónica va llegando a su fin. Antes del amanecer nos levantamos y ponemos rumbo al Refugio Paine Grande, que es el punto de encuentro para coger el catamarán que nos va a llevar de nuevo a la civilización.

The catamaran ride offers wonderful views of the park. As we arrived on mainland we took a bus to take us back to Puerto Natales, a picturesque village where we will rest for a whole day before we continue our journey to the north of Chile. The Atacama desert awaits!

El paseo en catamarán ofrece unas vistas maravillosas del parque. Una vez llegamos a tierra firme cogemos un autobús que nos dejará en Puerto Natales, pueblo pintoresco donde los haya, y lugar en el que vamos a descansar un dia antes de seguir nuestro viaje hacia el norte de Chile. El desierto de Atacama nos espera!
