This city is located in an amazing place, it is not surprising that its own citizens name this city "The Wonderful City" ("A Cidade Maravilhosa"). There are so many things you can do here, from sightseeing to nightlife and even extreme sports! I would recommend to stay at least 7 days, but if you want to relax as well you should stay longer, you could stay for months and find new things to do!

Esta ciudad está localizada en un lugar impresionante, no es de extrañar que sus propios ciudadanos la denominen "La Ciudad Maravillosa" ("A Cidade Maravilhosa"). Hay tantas cosas que hacer aquí... desde turismo hasta disfrutar de la vida nocturna, o incluso hacer deportes de riesgo! Personalmente recomendaría estar al menos 7 días, pero si quieres relajarte y disfrutar de la ciudad con tranquilidad deberías quedarte más, ¡podrías estar meses y seguirías encontrando mil cosas por hacer!

Just keep in mind you are in South America, use your common sense and be more careful at night. You might read all kinds of things on the internet, don't get too scared! If you are careful and watch where you go and don't show off your valuables, you should be fine.

Simplemente recuerda que estás en Sudamérica, usa tu sentido común y ten más cuidado de la cuenta por la noche. Leerás tantas cosas por internet... ¡no te asustes demasiado! Si tienes cuidado con los sitios a los que vas y no vas anunciando tus objetos de valor no debería pasar nada.

Here is a list of things you can do in Rio de Janeiro / Aquí tenéis una lista de los sitios que podéis visitar:

1. The Christ the Redeemer / Cristo Redentor

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, once you are there you will understand why. It is not only about the spectacular statue, is the location as well. There are not many places as especial as this one. The statue is on the top of the Corcovado, a mountain located in the Tijuca Forest. The views will leave you breathless and wether you go by yourself or with a tour, you will feel the need to go back! Very important: Go there on a sunny day to enjoy the amazing views!

Es una de las Siete Maravillas del Mundo, cuando estés allí entenderás el por qué. No se trata únicamente del espectacular Cristo, sino también del lugar en el que se encuentra. No hay muchos sitios tan impresionantes como este. La estatua se encuentra en la cima de Corcovado, una montaña situada en la selva de Tijuca. Las vistas os dejarán sin aliento, y tanto si vas solo o con un tour, sentirás la necesidad de volver! Muy importante: Ve en un día soleado para poder disfrutar sus impresionantes vistas!

2. Sugarloaf Mountain / Pan de Azúcar

Up here you will have the most stunning views, my personal favorite. Enjoy the ride in the cable car and stop at Praia Vermelha when you go down, it is very close!

Desde aquí tendrás unas vistas espectaculares, mis favoritas de Río. Disfruta del paseo en el teleférico y no olvides parar a tu vuelta en Praia Vermelha (Playa Roja), iestá muy cerca!

3. Praia Vermelha & Bahía de Guanabara / Praia Vermelha & Guanabara Bay

Praia Vermelha has the best views of the Sugarloaf Mountain, it is very close to the cable car. This is a great spot to see the sunset while eating some Tapioca. You can walk from here to Guanabara Bay. This is the bay where the Portuguese explorers first arrived in January 1502. They say they thought it was a river and not a bay, that explains the name of the city: Rio de Janeiro, January River.

Praia Vermelha tiene las mejores vistas del Pan de Azúcar, está muy cerca del teleférico. Es el lugar perfecto para ver el atardecer comiendo Tapioca. Puedes andar desde aquí hacia la bahía de Guanabara. Se trata de la bahía a la que llegaron los exploradores portugueses en enero de 1502. Dicen que en un primer momento pensaron que se trataba de un río y no de una bahía, de ahí el nombre: Río de Janeiro.

4. Copacabana & Ipanema / Copacabana & Ipanema

Despite to what you might think the weather in Rio changes very quickly due to its microclimate. If you see on the weather forecast it's going to be sunny, go to the beach and relax! Walk from Copacabana to Ipanema to see the locals surfing with the famous "Dois Irmãos" on the back, you can stop at Arpoador to see the sunset (the rocks between both beaches). Enjoy the great views but keep where the people are and be more careful as it gets dark.

El clima de Río es muy variable a pesar de lo que se suele creer, se debe a su microclima. Si ves en el tiempo que se espera un día de sol, aprovecha para relajarte en la playa! Pasea desde Copacabana hasta Ipanema para ver a los locales surfear con los famosos "Dois Irmãos" de fondo, puedes parar a tu vuelta en Arpoador para ver el atardecer (las rocas que se encuentran entre ambas playas). Disfruta de las vistas pero quédate donde haya más gente y sé más cauteloso cuando oscurezca.

6. The Maracanã Stadium / El Estadio Maracanã

This is such an epic place, we recommend to take a look inside. We booked tickets to see a football/soccer game there, but unfortunately it didn't take place due to safety reasons... it must be a great experience, especially if you like this sport!

Este lugar tan mítico se merece más que una breve parada. Lo más recomendable es reservar asientos para ver un partido, nosotros lo íbamos a hacer, pero por desgracia al final el partido se llevó a otro estadio por motivos de seguridad... debe ser toda una experiencia, sobre todo si te encanta el fútbol!

7. City Center, Santa Teresa & Lapa at night / Centro ciudad, Santa Teresa & Lapa de noche

Among other stops, we recommend you to visit the famous Selaron Steps in the city, very near to Lapa. Look for a tile from your city, there are tiles from all over the world! Santa Teresa is close to the city center, it is a nice quarter. Lapa at night is a MUST! you can eat diner in one of the many restaurants and stop at a bar for a Caipirinha with live music and see how the locals dance samba and enjoy the music. The Cariocas have it in their blood and dance samba in a way not everyone can learn, you have to be born with it! We saw an older woman dancing samba, it is undescriptible, you have to see it!

Entre otras paradas por la ciudad te recomendamos las Escaleras de Selarón, muy cerca de Lapa. Busca el azulejo de tu ciudad, hay de todas partes del mundo! Santa Teresa está cerca del centro, es un barrio bonito. Lapa de noche es OBLIGATORIO, puedes cenar en uno de los muchos restaurantes y pedir un Caipirinha en un bar con música en directo para ver a los locales bailar samba y disfrutar de la música. Los Cariocas llevan la samba en la sangre, no creo que se pueda aprender a bailar así, tienes que nacer con ello! Vimos una mujer mayor bailando samba, es indescriptible como lo viven, ¡tienes que verlo!

8. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas

You can walk there from Ipanema, you can rent a bike or a boat, or you can first see it with a Free Walking Tour. You will see locals doing sports, even if it rains. Locals pay a lot of attention to their bodies and want to be healthy. On your way back to Ipanema you can stop at any Juice Bar close to the La Chica de Ipanema Restaurant (where the famous song was written), this one is too touristic and expensive. You can eat a great plate with churrasquinho and feijoada much cheaper anywhere else, accompained by a drink like Guaraná or Açaí, or any jugo you like. Açaí is a purple fruit that comes from the amazon, it's very sweet and it's usually prepared like a smoothie, it is so dark that it looks brown more than purple, I thought it was chocolate, it's delicious!

Puedes andar hasta allí desde Ipanema, también puedes ir en bici o puedes ir con el Free Walking Tour. Allí encontrarás muchos locales haciendo deporte incluso si llueve. Los locales se preocupan mucho por su forma física y su salud. De vuelta a Ipanema puedes parar a cenar en uno de los Bar de Jugos cercanos al restaurante La Chica de Ipanema (donde se escribió la famosa canción). Éste último es muy turístico y algo caro, puedes comer churrasquinho y feijoada por mucho menos, acompañado de una bebida como el Guaraná o Açaí, o cualquier jugo que se te ocurra. El açaí es una fruta morada que viene del Amazonas, es muy dulce y lo suelen preparar como un smoothie, es tan oscuro que parece marrón más que morado, pensé que era chocolate... está riquísimo!

9. Favelas: Morro do Salgueiro & Rocinha

Before I went to Rio I was absolutely sure I didn't want to visit a Favela... I thought it was disrespectful and dangerous. But many guides in Rio recommended us otherwise. After all 20% of the popullation in Rio lives in a Favela, there are around 1000 Favelas only in Rio... so if you want to understand Brazil and this city, you have to visit a Favela. You should also know that Favelas have the best views in the entire city. You also can help the people there by doing a tour. We went to Rocinha, the largest Favela in Brazil. A part of what you pay for the tour could be used to help, in our case we contributed with an association which helps kids to study and have better options for the future. You can also buy souvenirs in the different stops and help them make a better living. This way more people will focus on making money from tourism instead of drugs.

Antes de ir a Río estaba totalmente segura de que no quería visitar las favelas... me parecía irrespetuoso y peligroso. Pero al llegar muchos guías locales nos lo recomendaron. Después de todo el 20% de la población de Río vive en favelas, hay unas 1000 favelas solamente en Río... por lo que si quieres comprender Brasil y en especial esta preciosa ciudad, tienes que visitar una favela. También deberías saber que las favelas tienen las mejores vistas de toda la ciudad. Además, parte de lo que pagas por el tour puede ayudar a gente que vive en ellas. Nosotros fuimos a Rocinha, la favela más grande de todo Brasil. En nuestro tour pudimos contribuir con una asociación que ayuda a niños con los estudios, teniendo mejores opciones de futuro. Otra manera de contribuir es comprando souvenirs en las distintas paradas, ayudando a que cada vez más gente quiera trabajar para ganar del turismo y no de las drogas.

You could also visit a Samba School at night... Samba is something you have to see in Rio, we saw a practice for the Carnival in Salgueiro Samba School and it was priceless. They are really passionate about carnival and dancing.

También puedes visitar una Escuela de Samba. Nosotros fuimos a la Favela Morro do Salgueiro y visitamos una de las escuelas de samba más famosas. Fue una experiencia increíble ver un ensayo para el carnaval. Ver como viven la samba es algo que no te debes perder aquí.

10. Floresta de Tijuca

This national park is worth the visit, even if you are used to hike, book the visit with a guide to make sure you find your way out. It won't be the first time some tourists are not ever found after entering here by themselves. We went with a guide and a couple from Mexico. You get to see waterfalls, amazing views and you can do trekkings in the nicest areas. Our guide was bitten by an insect at the end and was quite scared of what it could be, he said he was going to go to the hospital after he dropped us off...just be careful and never think you know better!

Este parque nacional se merece una visita. Aunque seas un senderista experimentado no te vayas por tu cuenta, reserva una excursión con un guía y asegúrate de encontrar el camino de vuelta. Si decides ir solo puede que seas otro de los turistas que desaparece en la selva. Nosotros fuimos con un guía y una pareja de México. Puedes ver cataratas, vistas impresionantes y hacer senderismo por las zonas más bonitas. A nuestro guía le picó un insecto al final del tour, estaba bastante preocupado porque no sabía lo que podría ser, dijo que iría al hospital después de dejarnos...así que no te confíes y ten cuidado!

11. Leme, Leblon, Botafogo & Flamengo

Leme is located at the beginning of Copacabana and Leblon at the end of Ipanema. Botafogo and Flamengo are some more beautiful beaches of Rio. We went there by bike. To rent a bike is a great idea in Rio!

Leme se encuentra al principio de Copacabana y Leblon al final de Ipanema. Botafogo y Flamengo son otras de las fantásticas playas de Río. Éstas dos últimas las podéis visitar en bici. Río es una ciudad genial para moverse en bici.

12. Botanical Gardens / Jardín Botánico

Another great place to visit if you are in Rio. You can see monkeys and exotic birds around. There are many beautiful flowers and strange plants you didn't even know they existed. The orchids greenhouse is very interesting, has a huge variety of orchids, something you cannot see everywhere.

Otro sitio más que merece la pena visitar. Podéis ver monos y pájaros exóticos por los jardines. Hay flores increíbles y plantas extrañas que no sabías ni que existían. El invernadero de orquídeas tiene una inmensa variedad que no se encuentra en cualquier parte.
