(EN) Iguazu Falls / (ES) Cataratas de Iguazú

In order to visit Iguazu Falls the best option is either stay in Puerto Iguazu (in Argentina) or in Foz Iguazu (in Brazil). From both places you can access easily to the falls. Just in case you didn't know, these falls are one of the official 7 Natural Wonders of the world. Para visitar las Cataratas de Iguazú la mejor opción es alojarse o bien en Puerto Iguazú (lado argentino) o bien en Foz Iguazú (lado brasileño). Desde ambos lugares, podréis acceder fácilmente a las cataratas, nombradas por cierto, una de las 7 maravillas naturales del mundo.

Buenos Aires - Puerto Iguazú

Since we are traveling around Argentina we decided to stay in Puerto Iguazu. It is a very humble town but it covers the travelers' basic needs. We arrived to this quaint location after spending 22 hours on a bus from Buenos Aires. Theoretically you need 18 hours to get there, but due to technical problems with the bus and an accident on the road that kept us for hours, we arrived 4 hours later. Once in Puerto Iguazu we buy some stuff to have enough food for breakfast and we also prepare some sandwiches to take with us the following day to the falls. After that and eating diner, time to sleep. Nosotros, al estar viajando por Argentina, nos hospedamos en Puerto Iguazú. Es un pueblecito bastante humilde pero que cubre las necesidades básicas del viajero. Llegamos a esta pintoresca localidad después de pasar 22 horas en autobús procedentes de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Teóricamente el trayecto se hace en unas 18 horas, pero debido a una avería en el autobús y a un choque frontal entre dos camiones que nos retuvo, llegamos con 4 horas de retraso. Una vez alojados en Puerto Iguazú, hicimos una pequeña compra para tener suficiente comida para los desayunos y además poder prepararnos algunos bocadillos para las Cataratas, y tras esto y una cena, a dormir.

Iguazu Falls in Argentina / Cataratas de Iguazú en Argentina

We are told that the first bus (the locals call the bus "colectivo") is at 7:15am, only 100m away from where we are staying at. So at 7 am we are already at the stop. The bus comes around that time (75ARS per person) and after 30 minutes we are at the entrance. We go quickly to buy the tickets (500ARS each) and go right in! It is very hot and humid (typical from the rainforest) but it is a beautiful sunny day, we couldn't ask for more. At an information counter we ask how to start the day and the truth is they were very helpful. This is what we did (and in this order): Nos cuentan que el primer autobús (de ahora en adelante lo llamaremos "colectivo") pasa a las 7:15am a tan sólo 100m de donde nos hospedamos, así que a las 7am estamos ya esperando. El Colectivo llega más o menos puntual (el precio es de 75ARS por persona) y nos deja tras una media hora en la entrada. Nos vamos rápido a la taquilla y sacamos nuestra entrada (500ARS cada uno) y de ahí directos al parque. Ya estamos dentro! Hace mucho calor y humedad (propio de la selva) pero el cielo está azul así que no se puede pedir más. En un punto de información preguntamos como afrontar el día, y lo cierto es que nos orientaron muy bien. Esto es lo que hicimos (y en el siguiente orden):

The devil's throat / La garganta del diablo This is the most popular attraction but I have to say it is not my favorite of all, even being really espectacular. From Estación Central we take the train to take us through the rainforest to the Estación Garganta, passing by Estación Cataratas. From here, a very nice path will take you over the Iguazu river to the Devil's throat directly. Once there you will be literally over some of the waterfalls. Amazing. Es la atracción estrella pero debo decir que no fue mi favorita, aunque es espectacular eso sí. Desde la estación Central del Parque se coge un tren que te lleva por medio de la selva hasta la estación Garganta, pasando por la estación Cataratas. Desde ahí, una muy bonita caminata por pasarelas sobre el río Iguazú os llevará directamente hasta la garganta. Una vez en la garganta, estaréis literalmente sobre algunas de las cascadas. Impresionante.

Low Trail / Circuito Inferior

After the devil's throat we went back to Estación Garganta and took the train to Estación Cataratas. Here is where we start the Low Trail, our favorite in Argentina. It takes around 1,15 hours to finish it, you will have fascinating views of some of the falls. From this trail you see tha falls from a low point, you can get really close and wet, while from the throat you are seeing them all from above (but you can also get wet!). After this trail we decided to have lunch, being really careful with the coaties and monkeys which want to steal our food. After some food and water we are ready to continue with the trails and paths.

Tras la Garganta del diablo volvimos a la estación Garganta y en tren fuimos hasta la estación Cataratas. Aquí es donde iniciamos el Circuito Inferior, que fue nuestro favorito en el lado argentino. En hora y algo podrás realizarlo e irás teniendo una vista espectacular de algunas de las cascadas. Las cascadas, a diferencia de en la Garganta del diablo, las ves desde abajo y a algunas de ellas podrás acercarte tanto que te empaparás. Tras este circuito decidimos comer, siempre con cuidado de que los coatíes o monos no nos roben la comida, y así reponer fuerzas para los siguientes circuitos y senderos.

Upper Trail / Circuito Superior

With our stomachs full we start this trail, which also starts at Estación Cataratas. In this path you get to see the falls from a higher location, right where the water falls down. It takes around 2 hours. No need to say this trail is also stunning =D.

Ya con el estómago lleno, realizamos este Circuito que también iniciamos a pie desde la estación Cataratas. En este recorrido irás viendo las cataratas pero desde arriba, justo desde donde inician el salto, y en algo menos de dos horas podrás realizarlo. No hace falta decir que este circuito también es increíble xD.

Green Trail / Sendero Verde

This short trail connects Estación Cataratas with Estación Central. It is interesting to stop and watch the nature around you.

Este es un corto recorrido que une la estación Cataratas con la estación Central. Es interesante pararse a ver la flora a los costados del camino.

Macuco Trail / Camino Macuco

Right at the end of the Green Trail you can find the begining of Macuco Trail (7 km). This trail was closed for a long time due to some pumas in the area, but on that day it was open. As I mentioned in other posts I get scared easily, so I won't deny I was looking around all the time, because there are not only pumas around here, there are also jaguars! At the end of the Macuco Trail there is a nice waterfall, where it is not allowed to swim but there are lots of people in the water.

Justo al finalizar el Sendero Verde, se encuentra el inicio del Camino Macuco (7 km). Este camino permaneció mucho tiempo cerrado debido al avistamiento de pumas, pero cuando nosotros estuvimos estaba abierto, así que, para allá que fuimos. Yo, como ya he dicho en otros artículos, soy bastante miedica así que no negaré que iba mirando a todos lados, porque no solo se ven pumas sino también jaguares! El Camino Macuco finaliza en una bonita cascada donde está prohibido bañarse y donde por cierto, todo el mundo se baña.

To end the day... / Para finalizar el día...

As we get back from the Macuco Trail alive (LOL), we go back to the Lower Trail. The best way to end the day. Once we get to the apartment, we eat something for dinner and relax, tomorrow the Iguazu Falls in Brazil await.

Cuando regresamos del Camino Macuco con vida (xD), volvemos a realizar el Circuito Inferior. Es la mejor forma de acabar el día. Una vez llegamos al alojamiento, cenamos algo y descansamos ya que al siguiente día nos esperan las cataratas del lado brasileño.

Useful information: / Información útil: After your day in Iguazu in Argentina it is important to get a stamp (until 6pm) on your entrance ticket, in case you want to return the following day. With this stamp you will get a 50% discount for the second day. In the Argentinian side, besides the paths and trails that I mentioned before, you can also take a boat (pretty expensive) and also visit San Martin Island. The Island was unfortunately closed due to the "high waters of the river" during our visit to the park. Al salir, es importante que os sellen la entrada (hasta las 6pm) para que al día siguiente, si queréis regresar, os hagan un descuento del 50%. Esto sólo es válido para el lado argentino. En el lado argentino, además de los senderos y circuitos que he descrito más arriba, se pueden hacer paseos en barco (bastante caros) y además visitar la Isla de San Martín, que debido a la crecida del río estaba cerrada durante nuestra visita al parque.

Iguazu Falls in Brazil / Cataratas de Iguazú en Brasil

At 9:30am we take a bus to take us directly to the park (80ARS per person to go and get back). Before we get to the there we have to get out of the bus twice to get a stamp on our passports when we exit Argentina and when we enter Brazil. On our way back we will have to repeat the process. A las 9:30am un Colectivo nos lleva hasta el parque (80ARS por persona ida y vuelta). Previamente hay que bajar dos veces del colectivo para sellar la salida de Argentina y la entrada en Brasil. A la vuelta debemos hacer el mismo proceso nuevamente.

As we get to the entrance we buy the tickets (63BRL per person) and another bus (inside the park) takes us to the starting point of the path to see the falls. From this point we have a panoramic view of the falls, we see the falls from the Argentinian side (which are around 85% of the whole Iguazu Falls area). As we get closer, we get to a path which take us to the devil's throat in the Brazilian side (don't get confuse with the Argentinian side! here you see it from a lower point) and I must say this is the place I like the most. In this place you are surrounded by waterfalls and over one of them. Be ready to get wet! Ya en la entrada compramos el ticket (63BRL por persona) y un nuevo colectivo (ya dentro del parque) nos lleva hasta la zona donde empieza el sendero para ver las cataratas. Desde este lado se tiene una vista mucho más panorámica, ya que lo que se ven son las cataratas que hay en el lado argentino (que son el 85%). A medida que avanzamos, el sendero nos lleva hasta la Garganta del diablo de lado brasileño (no confundirla con la del lado argentino! desde aquí lo ves desde un punto más bajo) y debo decir que fue el lugar que más me gustó. En este lugar estás rodeado de cataratas y además sobre una de ellas. Prepárate para empaparte!

After walking up and down these paths, it is time to get back. Again a bus take us to Puerto Iguazu, the last bus is at 5pm. As we get back early we use our afternoon to visit the Harbor in Puerto Iguazu, and we walk along the Costanera during sunset. We stop at the Hito Argentino, a monument to represent the Argentinian area. From here you can see the borders with Brazil and Paraguay, as well as the Iguazu and Paraná rivers. Después de recorrer de arriba a abajo estas pasarelas, es hora de volver. De nuevo un colectivo hasta Puerto Iguazú, el último colectivo sale a las 5pm. Aprovechamos que aún es pronto para visitar el Puerto de Puerto Iguazú (valga la redundancia) y de recorrer la Costanera durante el atardecer para llegar hasta el Hito Argentino, lugar desde donde se ven las fronteras con Brasil y Paraguay, además de los ríos Iguazú y Paraná.
