En Agra se encuentra el que posiblemente sea el mayor reclamo para los viajeros en la India. Estoy hablando sí, del Taj Mahal. No obstante, este no es el único lugar de interés, hay otros cuantos que bien merecen la pena ser visitados.

In Agra is located probably the most attractive place for travelers in India. Yes, I'm talking about the Taj Mahal. Of course, Agra has many other interesting places that you should visit if you travel there.

El día anterior habíamos viajado en tren desde la ciudad de Nueva Delhi hasta Agra, que es dónde se encuentra esta impresionante construcción. No había sido un día fácil. Ningún día en la India como viajero independiente lo es. El hecho de poder encontrar el andén correcto ya fue todo un reto, por no hablar de la lucha constante de tener que lidiar con los hindúes que ofrecían sus carísimos ¨servicios de transporte¨ y que incluso pretendían engañar sobre supuestos trenes que habían sido cancelados cuando no era cierto. Todo vale por ganarse unas rupias. Pero no les voy a juzgar, hay que ponerse en su piel. Viven en un país en el que la lucha por la supervivencia está, lamentablemente, a la orden del día.

The day before we traveled by train from New Delhi to Agra, where this amazing construction is located. It wasn't that easy. No day in India as an independent traveler actually is. Just being able to find the right platform was a challenge, not to mention the struggle with all the sellers offering all kinds of expensive "transport services" and even pretending the trains were cancelled, not being truth of course. Anything to make some money. Not that I blame them, they are just trying to make a living in a country where, sadly, they have to constantly fight to survive.

Al llegar al andén optamos por acomodarnos en el suelo (único lugar donde había espacio) y debido al retraso que trae el tren, estuvimos más de 4 horas esperando. Todo esto bajo la curiosa mirada de los hindúes que nos siguen observando como si fuéramos extraterrestres. Pero que nadie tenga miedo, simplemente hay que devolverles la mirada con una sonrisa y un amigable "namaste". Os devolverán la sonrisa. El trayecto hacia Agra también tomó más tiempo del esperado (unas 5-6 horas). Hay que tener en cuenta que este es un país con infraestructuras muy deficientes y estas cosas pueden ocurrir así que hay que armarse de paciencia. Lo importante es mantener siempre una buena actitud.

Finally on the platform we decided to sit on the floor (the only place available) and due to the delay of our train we waited over 4 hours, under the curious look of all hindus around us, looking at us like we were martians. But there is no reason to be afraid, just a smile and a friendly "namaste" and they will smile back. Our way to Agra took longer than expected, around 5 to 6 hours. In India you have to count on that, the infrastructures in India are insufficient and this might happen. So a lot of patience is needed, as well as a good attitude towards problems.

Durante el trayecto en tren Alicia consiguió dormir, qué raro… Yo en cambio no. Aproveché eso si para entablar amistad con el revisor. Yo no hablo hindú, ni una palabra. Ni él inglés. Pero de alguna forma, conseguimos entendernos. Hoy día seguimos manteniendo el contacto en whatsapp desde donde de cuando en cuando me envía un escueto y lleno de errores gramaticales ‘’hii frend hwr u?’’.

During the train ride Alicia was able to sleep, how surprising... Of course I wasn't. I used the time to make friends with a young train officer. I do not speak Hindi, not even a word, and he couldn't speak English. Somehow we managed to have a conversation. Today we are still in touch in whatsapp, where sometimes I get a short message from him and full of mistakes "hii frend hwr u?".

Después de un largo día conseguimos llegar a la estación de trenes de Agra, y de nuevo tenemos que ‘’pelearnos’’ por conseguir un precio justo (o más o menos justo) para ir en taxi hasta el hotel en el que nos hospedamos. El taxista no cesa en su intento de intentar convencernos para que contratemos sus servicios turísticos para el día siguiente, pero de forma amable le decimos que no. Queríamos ir al día siguiente por libre. Quizás no fue la decisión más inteligente, pero si la más aventurera (y económica). Aprovechamos para cenar y acto seguido nos vamos a dormir. El día de hoy ha sido intenso, y el que nos esperaba no lo iba a ser menos.

After a long day we made it to the train station in Agra, and again we need to "fight" to get a fair price to get to the hotel by taxi. On the way the taxi driver won't stop trying to convince us to hire his tour services for the following day, but we decline kindly. We wanted to do everything on our own on the following day. Maybe that wasn't the smartest decision, but definitely the most adventurous one (and the cheapest one too). We eat dinner and go to bed. We had an intense day today, and tomorrow won't be different.

Como todo gran día, ya lo he repetido en varios artículos, comienza con un madrugón. No son ni las 5am y yo tengo un dolor de garganta bastante molesto. En un primer lugar pensábamos que se debía al aire acondicionado. Más tarde supimos que tenía la garganta inflamada gracias a la contaminación de Nueva Delhi. Esto es la India... Nos vamos en taxi hacia la oficina (más barato que el carruaje de caballos), muy cerca del hotel, y compramos la entrada, dejamos la mochila ya que no se puede entrar al recinto prácticamente con nada y nos damos un paseo hacia la puerta de acceso, que está a unos 15 minutos a pie. Al llegar a la puerta de acceso la encontramos aún cerrada. Alicia aprovecha para comprarse una prenda para el pelo, y yo para envadurnarme con spray antimosquitos.

Any big day, like I always say, starts waking up really early. It's not even 5am and I have a sore throat. At first we thought that was caused by the air conditioning, but later we found out it was due to the air pollution in New Delhi. This is India... We take a taxi to the ticket office (cheaper than the horse carriage), very close to the hotel, and buy the tickets. We leave the bags in the lockers, you can barely take anything with you, and we walk to the entrance, around 15 minutes on foot. The entrance is not open yet, so Alicia takes the time to buy a scarve for her hair and I put some mosquito repellent on.

Mientras esperamos en nuestras respectivas colas (yo en la de hombres y Alicia en la de mujeres) nos entretenemos viendo como los monos van saltando de tejado en tejado. Se va acercando la hora de apertura, qué emoción! Pasamos por los detectores de metales, avanzamos rápidamente para ser los primeros en llegar y disfrutar del Taj Mahal para nosotros solos aunque sea durante al menos unos segundos y... voilá. Ahí está, el mausoleo más bonito que existe y una de las 7 maravillas del mundo moderno, erigido por el emperador Shah Jahan en honor a su esposa favorita, Arjumand Bano Begum, que murió dando a luz a su decimocuarta hija.

While we wait in our corresponding lines (I'm in the men's line and Alicia in the women's line) we watch the monkeys jump from roof to roof for entreteinment. The opening time is getting closer, we are very excited! We go through the metal detectors and walk quickly to be the first ones to get there and have the Taj Mahal to ourselves, even if it's just for a couple of seconds and... voilá. There it is, the most beautiful mausoleum on earth and one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, built by the emperor Shah Jahan to his favorite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, who died giving birth to his fourteenth daughter.

El recinto es mucho más que el Taj Mahal, pero este es quien, evidentemente, se lleva toda la atención. Pasamos varias horas aquí, investigando cada rincón, buscando los mejores ángulos para las fotografías y haciéndonos selfies con todos los hindúes que nos lo piden. Pero lo más impresionante fue ver como lentamente el sol iba apareciendo y llenando el recinto de color. Tras unas 4 horas aquí decidimos que era hora de ir a desayunar. Así que volvimos al hotel en tuk tuk, no sin antes casi originar una pelea, de forma involuntaria por supuesto, entre conductores. El resumen es que nosotros queríamos un precio justo, uno de los conductores aceptó, y el otro no. Y este último se encaró con el primero e incluso nos llegó a insultar, pero bueno, son cosas que pasan.

The place is much more than the Taj Mahal, but this is obviously the one getting all the attention. We spend several hours here exploring every corner, searching the best angles to take pictures and taking selfies with many locals who ask for it. But the most amazing is to watch the sun slowly going up and making the place even more colorful. After 4 hours or so we decided it was time for breakfast, so we go back to the hotel by tuk tuk, causing accidentally a little fight between tuk tuk drivers. To sum up, we wanted a fair price, one of the drivers accepted it and the other one didn't. The last one argued loudly with our driver and even insulted us. Well, sometimes this happens.

No tardamos demasiado en desayunar. El tiempo es oro y queríamos aprovecharlo así que de nuevo tuk tuk y rumbo hacia el centro de la ciudad de Agra. Una vez en este punto, no sabíamos muy bien que hacer. Miré la guía y me dije ''la mezquita principal de la ciudad no está lejos, y si vamos andando?''. Alicia, inocente ella, dijo, ''vale!'', y para allá que nos fuimos. Lo que no sabíamos es que iba a ser prácticamente imposible el poder caminar por esa zona. No dejaban de pararse tuk tuks ofreciendo precios abusivos. Numerosos niños, de no más de 3 años y completamente desnudos, se acercaban a nosotros para pedirnos dinero. Casi sin darnos cuenta nos vimos rodeados, en medio de un camino sin asfaltar, y sin saber muy bien qué hacer, así que lo siguiente que hicimos fue parar al siguiente tuk tuk que pasó y montarnos en él.

We didn't need long to eat breakfast, time is money and we want to use it well, so we take a tuk tuk again to go to the center of the city. Once here we are not sure what to do. I checked the guide and I said "the main mosque of the city is not far, why not walkk there?". Alicia, inocent, said: "Okay!", and there we went. What we didn't know was that it was nearly impossible to walk around that area. Every tuk tuk stopped offering expensive prices to take us there. Many kids, some of them under 3 years old and completely naked, were following us asking for money. In a couple of minutes we were surrounded by children by the road, not sure what to do we called the next tuk tuk and took it.

Ya nos daba igual el abusivo precio. Y aquí es donde entró en escena nuestro nuevo conductor. Un chaval de no más de 16 años que se pasó el viaje hablando con Alicia mientras que a mi me preguntó como 30 veces que cuál era mi nombre. Conseguimos llegar a la mezquita de Agra tras atravesar un enorme zoco donde todos nos miraban como si hubiéramos llegado de otro planeta (algo que no deja de ser verdad). Ya en la mezquita pudimos respirar algo de tranquilidad, pero no durante mucho tiempo. La mezquita merece la pena sin duda. No es tan impresionante como la de Nueva Delhi, pero aún así una parada es muy recomendable.

It didn't matter anymore the expensive price. Our next driver, not older than 16 years old, just wanted to talk to Alicia during the whole ride, not being able to remember my name after asking around 30 times. We finally got to the Agra's mosque, after going through a huge souk where everybody was staring at us, just like we were out of this world (which is somehow true). At the mosque we could finally breathe and enjoy the peace, but not for long. The mosque is worth the visit, is not as impressive as New Delhi's, but we highly recommend it.

En el momento de salir se nos acerca un grupo de hombres con sus hijos y empiezan a hacerse fotos con nosotros. Puede parecer divertido, pero llega un punto en el que es muy agobiante, y tras varios minutos de selfie aquí y allá, tuvimos que salir literalmente corriendo. Por suerte, el conductor de tuk tuk estaba esperando y pusimos rumbo al siguiente destino, el Mausoleo de Itimad-ud-Daula, más comúnmente conocido como Baby Taj. Aquí si que pudimos respirar tranquilidad. Tanto es así que me quedé dormido en una de las ventanas. Hay que tener en cuenta que las horas en la India son muy intensas y el cuerpo lo termina pagando. Alicia se pasó todo el tiempo con sus fotos y vídeos. A Alicia le encantó este lugar, y éramos practicamente los únicos extranjeros por aquí.

When we were getting out, a group of men with their children started taking pictures with us. It might sound funny, but it can be annoying and even stressful. After a selfie here and there we had to run away, literally. Luckily our tuk tuk driver was waiting outside, and we headed to the next destination: Itimad-ud-Daula mausoleum, commonly known as Baby Taj. Here we could finally relax. I even fell asleep in one of the windows. As I was saying, the days in India are really intense. Alicia wasn't tired at all, she spent the whole time taking pictures and videos. Alicia loved this place and we were probably the only foreigners around.

Aún teníamos tiempo por delante así que decidimos visitar el Fuerte de Agra, uno de los mejores conservados de la India. El día está siendo tan intenso y emocionante que nos olvidamos hasta de comer. El fuerte es espectacular y además ofrece unas muy bonitas vistas del Taj Mahal. La entrada no es demasiado barata pero merece la pena. Uno no tiene todos los días la posibilidad de ver un lugar así. La tarde va cayendo y por supuesto, no nos vamos a ir de Agra sin verlo desde el Taj Mahal, así que de nuevo tuk tuk y para allá que volvemos. El conductor nos deja en un punto que no conocemos, y tardamos un rato en encontrar una de las puertas de acceso.

We still have time and we can't miss Agra Fort, one of the best preserved forts in India. The day was so intense and exciting that we even forgot to eat. The Fort is amazing and has stunning views of the Taj Mahal. The entrance fee is not cheap, but is worth the visit. You don't have the opportunity to see a place like this one everyday. The sunset will be soon, and we can't leave Agra without seeing it from the Taj Mahal. So we take another tuk tuk and there we go. This time the driver drops us at a point we don't know and it takes a while to find our way to the entrance.

Es curioso ver como cambia el tipo de visitantes según la hora. Por la mañana, todos eran turistas occidentales, por la tarde, únicamente hay hindúes. Nos quedamos por la zona hasta que anochece y somos prácticamente los últimos en abandonar el recinto. Nuestro lema en este tipo de lugares tan especiales es algo así como ''hasta que no me echen, no me voy''. Ya de noche cerrada volvemos a la oficina a recoger las mochilas, y después de ''pelearnos'' con otro conductor de tuk tuk, conseguimos llegar al hotel, nuestro oasis de paz. El día se ha acabado. Prueba superada.

It is funny to see the difference in the visitors as the time goes by. In the morning there are mostly tourists from around the world. On the other hand, in the evening there are only visitors from India. We stay until it gets dark, we are probably the last ones to leave the place. When we are in such special places like this one we don't leave until theyactually kick us out. When it gets totally dark, we go back to the ticket office to pick up our bags, struggle one more time with a tuk tuk driver, and finally get to the hotel. Back in our peaceful oasis, the day is over and we survived.
