We spent a couple of days in Ollantaytambo, we've used these days to visit the sacred valley while getting used to the altitude progresively. We are about to take the train, which will take us to the small village called Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Town. This is the closest town to Machu Picchu and from here you can visit the amazing ruins.
Pasamos un par de días en el pueblo de Ollantaytambo, hemos aprovechado para visitar el valle sagrado además de aclimatarnos a la altura de forma progresiva. Estamos a punto de coger el tren que nos va a llevar hacia la pequeña localidad de Aguas Calientes, también conocida como Machu Picchu Pueblo. Esta es la localidad más cercana a Machu Picchu y desde ella se puede acceder a las increíbles ruinas.
The journey by train is really nice and offers some beautiful views, absolutely worth seeing. We can tell we are getting closer to the ancestral inca city, which existence was made public to the world by Hiram Bingham in 1911.
El trayecto en tren es muy agradable y ofrece unas vistas que bien merecen la pena. Uno va sintiendo que se está acercando a la ancestral ciudad inca que en 1911 Hiram Bingham dio a conocer al mundo.
As we arrive to Aguas Calientes people at the station keep asking us if we need a room. We already booked a room so we escape from them as fast as we can. Of course, always with a smile on our faces.
Al llegar a Aguas Calientes nos invaden los agentes turísticos que como locos buscan a quien poder ofrecer alojamiento. Nosotros ya vamos con habitación reservada así que los esquivamos como bien podemos. Eso sí, siempre con una sonrisa en la cara.
Once the check in has been done, we leave our backpacks and get out to explore this small town. We didn't really hear anything nice about this place. Everybody told us it was too touristic (and it was absolutely true!), but somehow it is very charming. We loved Aguas calientes and the environment around it.
Una vez hecho el check-in, dejamos las mochilas y nos vamos a explorar este pequeño pueblo. No nos habían hablado demasiado bien de él. Todo demasiado explotado nos decían (y era muy cierto!), pero por algún motivo, nos encantó Aguas Calientes y el ambiente que se respiraba.
The big day: Machu Picchu / El gran día: Machu Picchu
Today is the main reason we came to Peru in the first place. We woke up at 3:50am to wait in line for the bus that will take us up to the ruins of Machu Picchu. It takes around 30 minutes to get there. You can also walk up, we will definetely walk next time. We waited over one hour in line, talking to other travelers also excited about what was coming in a few minutes.
Sólo por un día como este merece la pena viajar al Perú. Nos levantamos a las 3:50 de la mañana y nos vamos a la cola del autobús para poder subir a las ruinas de Machu Picchu. Es un trayecto que dura una media hora. Es cierto que se puede hacer andando. Nos lo apuntamos para la próxima. Esperamos más de una hora en la cola, hablando con más viajeros también emocionados por lo que nos esperaba en tan sólo unos minutos.
We got on the second bus. It was worth the wait, we will have it all to ourselves for a brief period of time. The way up is a zig zag road that looks like out of one of those Indiana Jones movies. The fog and the green mountains all around us create an exceptional effect.
Conseguimos subir en el segundo autobús, la espera ha merecido la pena. Podremos disfrutar durante un ratito de las ruinas para nosotros solos. El trayecto en autobús es una carretera en forma de zigzag que parece salida de alguna película de Indiana Jones. La niebla y el verde de las montañas predominan en el paisaje y crean un efecto increíble.
We get to the entrance, show our tickets and passports (mandatory) and...we are finally here! We walk quickly to the exact point to see the panoramic views over the citadel. We are right there, the famous image of the citadel is right in front of us, just some meters away, but we are not able to see it! the fog covers the whole view.
Llegamos a la entrada. Mostramos nuestra entrada y pasaporte (obligatorio) y…. ¡ya estamos aquí! Como locos subimos hasta buscar el punto exacto en el que tener unas vistas panorámicas de la ciudadela. Ya estamos en ese punto, la famosa imagen de la ciudadela está frente a nosotros, a sólo unos metros, pero no la vemos! la niebla nos lo impide.
And then, all of a sudden, the fog fades away and we see the splendid citadel. Undescribable. We decided it was a good idea to do the guided visit around the citadel, in order to hear not only the history of the place but also the meaning of each location and important buildings in the citadel. It was definitely worth, we recommend it to everyone.
Y entonces de repente, en cuestión de segundos, la niebla desaparece y la ciudadela se muestra en todo su esplendor. Indescriptible. Decidimos que sería buena idea tener una visita guiada por la ciudadela para que nos contasen toda su historia así como el significado de muchos de los lugares que aquí se encuentran. Mereció la pena. Recomendamos a todos que lo hagan.
At the end of the guided visit (at around 9am) we head to the entrance to access Huayana Picchu, the mountain in the background of the typical picture of Machu Picchu. We booked our tickets to go up to the top at 10am. The hike requires 40 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your good shape and/or if you are afraid of heights. Personally we do not think it is too dangerous. You just need to pay attention to where you step on and use your common sense, that's all. The views of the citadel from the top are absolutely worth it.
Al finalizar la visita guiada (en torno a las 9 de la mañana) nos dirigimos hacia la entrada de Huayna Picchu, que es la montaña que aparece de fondo en la típica foto de Machu Picchu. Tenemos una reserva para subir a lo más alto a las 10 de la mañana. La subida requiere entre 40 minutos y 1 hora, dependiendo de tu estado físico y/o miedo a las alturas. A nosotros personalmente no nos pareció demasiado peligroso. Únicamente hay que saber dónde pisar e ir con sentido común, nada más. Las vistas de la ciudadela desde arriba merecen la pena.
Once we were back on the ground we went to the place with the panoramic views of the citadel again. We enjoyed the views while eating the sandwiches they gave us at the hotel, our breakfast to take away. There is no better place! After our break we get back to it. This time we head to the Sun Gate. The path which leads you to the Sun Gate is upwards and I keep asking myself: why every place worth visiting has to be uphill?
Una vez bajamos de Huayna Picchu nos volvemos a ir al punto panorámico de la ciudadela y tranquilamente nos comemos unos bocadillos que nos habían dado en el hotel, el desayuno para llevar. No existe mejor lugar! Un descansito y de nuevo nos ponemos en marcha. Esta vez para ir hasta la Puerta del sol (seguimos en el Perú, no en Madrid). El camino hacia la puerta del sol es de continua subida y yo no dejo de preguntarme: ¿por qué todo lo que merece la pena está cuesta arriba?
We see some llamas on the way up and also a giant hummingbird (distinctive of the sacred valley) and we even see a poor woman being carried in a gurney because she got altitude sickness. This is getting epic! As we get to the Sun Gate we sit down to take our time to enjoy the fantastic views before we start our way down. The day is coming to an end...
Nos cruzamos con varias llamas en el camino, también vemos un colibrí gigante (característico del valle sagrado) e incluso una pobre mujer a la que le ha dado mal de altura se la llevan de vuelta en camilla. Esto se pone cada vez más épico! Ya en la famosa puerta del sol nos sentamos y disfrutamos tranquilamente de las vistas antes de iniciar el camino de vuelta. El día poco a poco se va acabando…
While we are walking down the citadel the tourists are leaving, most of them come and leave Aguas Calientes on the same day. Big mistake in our humble opinion, the visit to Machu Picchu deserves all the time in the world. But we won't complain, we have again the whole citadel to ourselves.
Mientras bajamos de vuelta a la ciudadela, los turistas van desapareciendo, muchos de ellos vienen y se van en el mismo día. Gran error en nuestra humilde opinión, ya que Machu Picchu bien merece todo el tiempo del mundo. Pero no nos vamos a quejar, la ciudadela vuelve a quedarse desierta para nosotros.
We decided to finish our day where we started, while we wait for somebody to kick us out. Our goal was to be the first ones to get here and the last ones to leave and so we did. At the end of the day the sky was clear and there were a lot of llamas posing for the remaining tourists. If you ask me today which is the most amazing place I've ever been to, I wouldn't doubt it for a second to answer out loud "Machu Picchu"! I hope we can come back soon.
Decidimos finalizar nuestro día donde lo comenzamos y esperar a que nos echen. Nos habíamos propuesto ser los primeros en llegar y los últimos en irnos. Y lo íbamos a conseguir. Al final del día el cielo se despejó y un montón de llamas posaban para los turistas que seguíamos allí. Si hoy me preguntan cuál es el lugar más increíble en el que he estado, no dudaría ni un segundo en responder bien alto ‘¡Machu Picchu!’. Ojalá y volvamos a vernos pronto.
