One of the best ways to get to Buenos Aires is crossing La plata river, so that is exactly what we do. As we are in Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay we take the ferry, it takes less than 2 hours and we arrive to Puerto Madero, one of the most exclusive areas at the Argentinian capital. Unfortunately we don't have Argentinian pesos as we arrive, so we have to walk around 40 minutes carrying our backpacks to Plaza de Mayo. From here we can take the metro/subway (also known as Subte in Buenos Aires) and we are finally there. The hotel is great in terms of price and quality, but the location is not the best. Una de las formas más interesantes de llegar a la ciudad de Buenos Aires, es cruzando el río de la plata, y eso es justamente lo que hacemos. Aprovechando que estamos en Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay), cogemos un ferry de algo menos de 2 horas que nos deja en Puerto Madero, una de las zonas más exclusivas de la capital argentina. Al no disponer de pesos argentinos en el momento de nuestra llegada, nos toca andar unos 40 minutos cargando con las mochilas hasta llegar a la Plaza de Mayo, donde pudimos tomar el metro (conocido como Subte en Buenos Aires) y llegar sin mayores complicaciones al que sería nuestro alojamiento. Un hotel con una relación calidad-precio magnífica, aunque situado en una zona quizás poco aconsejable.

Ahora ya sí, mochilas en la habitación y ansiosos salimos a descubrir esta ciudad. Aquí os dejo todo lo que se puede hacer en Buenos Aires: July 9th Avenue / Avenida 9 de Julio This is the widest avenue in the world (well... this information is quite tricky) and one of the main roads of Buenos Aires as it connects the northern area with the southern area of the city. Why tricky? because is not only the Avenida 9 de Julio they are taking into account but also the streets Carlos Pellegrini and Cerrito. The main attraction of this avenue is the Obelisk, the symbol of the city and probably the most photographed place.

Esta es la avenida más ancha del mundo (este dato tiene trampa) y una de las arterias principales de Buenos Aires, uniendo la parte sur con la parte norte de la ciudad. Digo que este dato tiene trampa, porque la avenida no sólo contabiliza la avenida 9 de julio, sino también las calles contiguas Carlos Pellegrini y Cerrito. Podría decirse que esta avenida alcanza su punto álgido en donde se encuentra el Obelisco, símbolo de la ciudad y quizás el lugar más fotografiado.

May Square / Plaza de Mayo This is the heart of Buenos Aires. It is surrounded by buildings as important as la Casa Rosada (the Pink House), the old cabildo (the Town Hall during colonial times) and the cathedral, where the Pope Francis gave mass. This square is historically known as the place where the citizens rose up against the government and where, still today, the mothers of the people who vanished demonstrate. Este es el verdadero corazón de Buenos Aires. Se encuentra además rodeada de edificios tan importantes como la Casa Rosada, el antiguo cabildo y la catedral, lugar donde el Papa Francisco daba sus misas. Esta plaza se ha caracterizado por ser el lugar histórico donde el pueblo se ha revelado contra el gobierno y donde a día de hoy, las madres de los desaparecidos continúan con su lucha.

Pink House / Casa Rosada This is the house of the government, that is where the president works. This building has a long history and one of the relevant moments are the speeches Eva Perón or Evita gave from one of the balconies, as well as the historical moment in which Diego Armando Maradona showed the award won in the World Cup in 1986. Esta es la casa de gobierno, es decir, el lugar donde el presidente ejerce sus labores. Es mucha la historia que alberga este edificio y como momentos a destacar se encuentran los discursos que desde uno de los balcones Eva Perón, Evita, daba a sus queridos descamisados así como el momento en el que Diego Armando Maradona mostró a sus compatriotas la copa del mundo conseguida en 1986.

Buenos Aires Cathedral / Catedral de Buenos Aires As I already mentioned, not only was the place where the current Pope gave mass but it was also the place where the father of all Argentinians was buried, the Liberator, the General San Martín. This is probably the only person in the history of Argentina that doesn't create any controversy. He is the authentic national hero and his grave deserves a visit. An interesting fact is that he is not buried inside of the cathedral but in an annex, the reason why is that the General San Martin wasn't catholic, he was a mason. Como comenté antes, además de ser el lugar donde el actual Papa daba misa, la catedral es donde está enterrado el padre de los argentinos, el libertador, el General San Martín. Este es posiblemente el único personaje en la historia de Argentina que no levanta ninguna controversia. Es el auténtico ídolo nacional y su tumba bien merece una visita. Como dato curioso, comentar que realmente no se encuentra enterrado en el interior de la catedral, sino en un anexo, y esto es porque el general San Martín no era católico, sino masón. Florida St. and Corrientes Av. / Calle Florida y Avenida Corrientes Florida Street is the perfect place to go shopping. This street is only opened for pedestrians and many street artists will entertain you as you walk through it. Watch out for pickpockets! Corrientes Avenue is where the theaters are, full of life and most importantly where you will find the best places to try the famous pizza porteña and the empanadas. La calle Florida es el lugar ideal en el que hacer algunas compras. Totalmente peatonal y con muchos artistas callejeros que te irán entreteniendo durante el paseo. Ojo con los carteristas! La avenida corrientes es la avenida de los teatros, llena de vida y donde encontraréis los mejores lugares en los que probar la famosa pizza porteña y sus empanadas.

Caminito If you have time left try to visit this place. It is 100% touristic (we don't love that) but it is charming. You can visit some of the conventillos (where the Tango has its origins) and see the tango dancers around. Not far away from here is la Bombonera, Boca Juniors' Stadium. Even if this area is very touristic keep in it. Don't forget you are in the Quarter of Boca, one of the most dangerous of the world, and unfortunately in the past few weeks some ugly things have happened to visitors. Si tienes un rato libre, acércate a este lugar. Es 100% turístico (y eso no nos encanta) pero tiene algo de encanto. Podrás visitar algunos de los conventillos (el lugar donde tiene origen el Tango) de la zona y ver artistas callejeros bailando tango. A unos pocos metros se encuentra la Bombonera, estadio de Boca Juniors. A pesar de que Caminito es exageradamente turístico, no te salgas de esta zona. No olvides que estás en el barrio de Boca, uno de los más peligrosos del mundo, y desgraciadamente en las últimas semanas han sucedido episodios bastante violentos con algún visitante.

May Avenue and the Congress of the Nation / Avenida de Mayo y Congreso de la Nación From the Congress of the Nation, an impressive building with Greek-Roman style, starts May Avenue. This Avenue was built according to Champs Elissés in Paris. Today they don't look so similar, but it is a nice avenue to go for a walk. May Avenue also has some important places such as Café Tortoni, where intellectuals used to go to, or Barolo Palace, which interiors reflect the world according to Dante in the Divine Comedy. Desde el Congreso de la Nación, un imponente edificio de estilo greco-romano, nace la famosa avenida de mayo, que intentó ser una copia de los campos elíseos parisinos. Hoy día, hay poca similitud entre ambas avenidas pero si que es un agradable lugar por el que pasear. Además, esta avenida alberga lugares tan importantes como el café Tortoni, donde iban todos los intelectuales de la época, o el Palacio Barolo, que en su interior refleja el mundo según Dante en la divina comedia.

San Telmo & Palermo San Telmo is the bohemian quarter of the city. The best day to visit is on Sundays, that way you won't miss the markets of San Telmo. We recommend you to go to Palermo as well, where you can eat in one of the bodegones. Not far away from here is the Botanical Garden (free of charge), it is nice to walk around and relax sitting on a bench. El barrio de San Telmo es el barrio bohemio de la ciudad. Aconsejamos visitarlo un domingo, que es cuando el famoso mercado de San Telmo tiene lugar. El barrio de Palermo es también bastante aconsejable y ahí encontraréis los famosos bodegones en los que comer algo. Además, muy cerca se encuentra el jardín botánico (gratuito) en el que dar un paseo y descansar sentado en algún banco.

Recoleta Cemetery / Cementerio de la recoleta It is probably one of the most beautiful cemeteries of the world. More than a cemetery, it looks like a sculpture museum. Some of the most important people in the history of Argentina rest in peace right here, as well as some of the richest families. Some of the most visited graves are the ones from Eva Perón and the ex-president Sarmiento. We highly recommend you to do the free tour to understand more about this cemetery and get to know some of the stories of the people buried here. Posiblemente uno de los cementerios más bonitos del mundo. Más que un cementerio, parece un museo de esculturas. Aquí descansan algunos de los personajes más representativos de la historia argentina así como algunas de las familias más pudientes. Algunas de las tumbas más visitadas son la de Eva Perón y la del ex-Presidente Sarmiento. Es altamente recomendable hacer la visita guiada gratuita para entender más sobre este cementerio y para conocer algunas de las historias de las personas que aquí descansan.

Flower Park - Floralis Genérica / Parque de la flor - Floralis Genérica This is a metallic structure with the shape of a flower located at the United Nations Square and it was a gift to the city of Buenos Aires given by the Argentinian architect Eduardo Catalano. As the time passes the flower opens, and finally closes slowly by the end of the day. It is a nice place to relax on a sunny day. Se trata de una estructura metálica (con forma de flor, claro) situada en la plaza de las naciones unidas y que fue un regalo del arquitecto argentino Eduardo Catalano a la ciudad de Buenos Aires. A medida que el día avanza, esta flor metálica se va abriendo y cerrando. Es un buen lugar para descansar.

Library el Ateneo / Biblioteca el Ateneo Not only one of the most beautiful cemeteries is in Buenos Aires, one of the most espectacular libraries can also be found here. The Library el Atenea it used to be a place for operas and now it is the ideal place to take a break from all the walking and check out travel guides to prepare future destinations. Si Buenos Aires puede presumir de tener uno de los cementerios más bonitos del mundo, también puede presumir de tener uno de las bibliotecas mas espectaculares. La biblioteca el Atenea, antes una ópera, es el lugar ideal para relajarse mientras se ojean guías de viaje preparando los próximos destinos.

San Martin Park and the English Tower / Parque San Martín y Torre de los Ingleses San Martin Park and the English Tower are located face to face and it is no coincidence. There is a monument in San Martin Park to remember all the Argentinian soldiers that died during the Malvinas war. Still today, this war is a very sensitive topic. El Parque San Martín y la Torre de los Ingleses se encuentran cara a cara, y esto no es coincidencia. En el parque San Martín se encuentra un monumento a todos los soldados argentinos caídos durante la guerra de las Malvinas. Este es un tema que a día de hoy sigue siendo muy sensible.

Palermo Woods / Bosques de Palermo The official name is February 3 Park, but everyone knows it as Palermo Woods. These are the lungs of the city and the perfect place to ride a bike among the trees and lakes. El nombre oficial es Parque 3 de febrero pero todos lo conocen como Bosques de Palermo. Es uno de los pulmones de la ciudad y un lugar perfecto para pasear en bicicleta entre sus árboles y lagos.

Puerto Madero This is probably the safest area in Buenos Aires, which means it is one of the most expensive areas as well. It is full of nice restaurants and cafés, and a great place to walk around by sunset. The most popular attraction is the famous bridge of the woman, from the architect Santiago Calatrava from Valencia, Spain. Este es posiblemente el lugar más seguro de Buenos Aires, lo que también implica que es de los más caros. Se encuentra lleno de restaurantes y cafeterías y es un lugar perfecto para pasear durante el atardecer. El lugar más característico es el famoso puente de la mujer del arquitecto valenciano Santiago Calatrava.

For lunch and dinner / Para comer y cenar Argentina is well-known to be the place with high-quality meat, and there is a lot to choose from: Choripan, Vacío, BIfé de Chorizo, Chinchulines and many more. However Buenos Aires has even more to offer. At Corrientes Avenue you can find some of the best pizza places of the country, where it is a MUST to try the delicious pizza porteña, different to all pizzas you've tried before. We recommend you to go to Banchero or Güerrin and order at the counters, just like porteños do. If you are tired, you can order from a table, but you'll pay a bit more. You can also try the famous empanadas at pizza places, you won't regret it! Es por todos sabido que Argentina es la tierra de las parrilladas y no es poca la oferta: Choripan, Vacío, Bifé de Chorizo, Chinchulines, y un largo etc. Pero Buenos Aires tiene más que eso. En la Avenida Corrientes encontrarás algunas de las mejores pizzerías del país para degustar la deliciosa pizza porteña que poco tiene que ver con el resto de pizzas que hayas probado. Te recomendamos ir a Banchero o Güerrin y pedir porciones para tomar en los mostradores, como los verdaderos porteños. SI estás cansado, puedes tomar las porciones en mesa, pero estas serán más caras, aunque poco más. Ah, y no pidas extra de queso, porque ya vienen así las porciones. En estos mismo lugares encontrarás también las famosas empanadas. Pruébalas!

For breakfast and coffee time / Para desayunar y merendar How can a Spanish person survive without breakfast and coffee time? Well, the good news are that Buenos Aires has lots of Cafés and most of them offer promotions where you can have coffee, juice and even some croissants for little money. Alicia and I ordered those "promos" everyday in the afternoon, perfect to take a break from all the walking. If you are willing to spend more, we highly recommend you stopping at one of the Cafés called Havanna. These Cafés are the Argentinian version of Starbucks, and there you can find the best alfajores!

Qué seria de los españoles sin su desayuno y merienda, verdad? Pues bien, la buena noticia es que en Buenos Aires hay infinidad de cafeterias y la gran mayoría ofrecen "promos" en la que por muy poquito dinero te dan un café, un zumo, y algunas medialunas. Con eso, Alicia y yo merendábamos todos los días. Si queréis gastar un poquito más, recomendamos visitar alguna de las cafeterías Havanna. Estas cafeterías son algo así como el Starbucks pero únicamente en Argentina y aquí vais a encontrar los mejores alfajores!

El Tigre

It is worth using a complete day to visit El Tigre. You need to get there by train and once there you can walk around the markets, take a boat through the waterways of the delta and eat at any of the restaurants around. This was Alicia's favorite place, she even wishes to go back and stay a couple of days in a house near the water and relax, it is a very nice area!

Merece la pena usar un día completo para visitar El Tigre. Tienes que ir hasta allí en tren y una vez allí puedes pasear por los mercados, coger un barco por los canales del delta y comer en cualquiera de los restaurantes de la zona. Este fue el sitio favorito de Alicia, incluso dice que le gustaría volver y quedarse unos días en una de las casas cercanas al río y relajarse, es una zona muy bonita!

We did the free tour at the Cemetery La Recoleta and the one in the city center. Both highly recommended! The guides are great and the history of this city and the country are fascinating.
