(EN) San Francisco at its best / (ES) Lo mejor de San Francisco

This is one of my favorite cities in the world, maybe part of it is because this city is where we met in 2009. We came back in 2018 during our year around the world. It was one of the places I was most excited about even if I had been there already! There were still so many places I missed the first time, so I couldn't wait to go back and rediscover every inch of the city, this time with my husband and logistics expert. Hopefully next time we visit San Francisco it will be with our girls.

Esta es una de mis ciudades favoritas en el mundo, quizás se deba a que fue aquí donde nos conocimos en 2009. En el año 2018, durante nuestro viaje por el mundo, no podíamos dejar de volver a este lugar y así lo hicimos. Había tantos sitios que me quedaron pendientes en mi primera visita a esta ciudad que estaba ansiosa de poder explorar cada rincón, y esta vez con la ayuda de mi marido (el experto en logística). Ojalá y la próxima vez que visitemos esta maravillosa ciudad sea con nuestras hijas.

Getting Ready / Preparativos

Like most people, I thought San Francisco had a wonderful weather especially in the summer. We all know California to be the sunny state of the US... But if you are planning on visiting this city during the summer or any other time of the year, look at the weather before packing! Usually summer has a milder weather. Pack some extra clothes anyway for the rain and especially for the wind, some layers just in case and you should be fine! No matter how the weather is, I can promise you this city will be hard to leave, and even harder if you enjoy such beautiful sunny days as we did in July!

Como la mayoría, pensaba que San Francisco tenía un clima perfecto, especialmente en verano. Todos conocemos California por ser el estado soleado de EEUU... Pero si estás planeando visitar esta ciudad durante el verano o en cualquier época del año, mira el tiempo antes de hacer la maleta! Normalmente en verano las temperaturas son más suaves. Igualmente no te olvides de llevar ropa para la lluvia y el viento. Lo mejor es llevar un par de capas y no habrá problemas. Pero sea como sea el clima, te aseguro que te costará despedirte de esta ciudad, y más aún si tienes la fortuna de poder disfrutar de días tan soleados como los que tuvimos nosotros en Julio.

Aquí os dejo una lista de los lugares que no os podéis perder en vuestra visita a San Francisco. Y lo más importante, no olvidéis ponerte flores en el pelo como dice la canción!!!

Golden Gate

T​his famous landmark deserves a sunny day to see it at its best. No matter how high are your expectations, this bridge is just absolutely stunning and if you like bridges as much as I do, you will search for it no matter where you are in the city. If you have views of the sea from one of those steep hills, you will look for it too!

Este es considerado el símbolo de la ciudad y merece un día soleado para poder disfrutarlo en todo su esplendor. No importa como de alta sean tus expectativas... El puente Golden Gate es simplemente alucinante, y si te gustan los puentes, como es mi caso, estarás continuamente buscándolo con la mirada desde cualquier colina de la ciudad...

Rent a bike and spend a day riding through the city and later across the bridge. Once you go past it, don't forget to ride your bike uphill to stop at one of the most epic view points! You will probably feel the need to stop many times to admire the bridge from all the different perspectives along the way. Continue riding till you reach Sausalito, a cute little town perfect to take a walk with views of the bay, drink a coffee on one of the cute terraces or just stop for a big burger right before you do all that, like we did! If you don't want to take the bike all the way back to the city, you can pay the service for parking and return of the bike. You will pay a little more than the parking but you will save a really long line to get on the ferry with your bike (check that you can do that at the shop you rent your bike at, not all Bike companies have that option!). I promise you this day will be unforgettable.

El mejor consejo que podemos daros es el de alquilar una bicicleta y pasar un día pedaleando por la ciudad para finalmente cruzar el puente. Una vez estéis al otro lado, no olvidéis pedalear un poco más hacia la colina que queda a vuestra izquierda para contemplar el puente desde diferentes perspectivas. Continua pedaleando hasta la agradable localidad de Sausalito, un lugar perfecto para pasear con vistas a la bahía, tomar un café en una de sus muchas terrazas o comer una buena hamburguesa. Si estás cansado y no te ves con fuerza para deshacer el camino, puedes pagar un servicio extra para que tu bicicleta sea devuelta desde Sausalito, sin que tú tengas que preocuparte. Además, con esto te ahorrarás las largas colas para subir al ferry de vuelta a la ciudad, ya que al no llevar bicicleta, tienes prioridad. Es importante que al alquilar vuestra bicicleta comprobéis que existe la opción de devolverla en Sausalito. Os aseguro que este día será inolvidable.

Embarcadero

What can I say, I really love bridges and this place is perfect to watch the sunset with the Bay bridge in the background. If you were amazed by the long famous red hanging bridge, this one leaves no one indifferent either. The Ferry Building is one of the famous locations of the city. Take a look inside to discover great restaurants, gourmet shops and even a market. Outside you will find a Gandhi Statue with views of the bridge.

Qué decir de este lugar... Me encantan los puentes y este es un punto perfecto para ver el atardecer con el Bay Bridge de fondo. Si te impresionó el famoso puente colgante y su intenso color rojo, este tampoco te dejará indiferente. El Ferry Building es una de las localizaciones famosas de la ciudad. Echa un vistazo en su interior para descubrir una gran variedad de restaurantes, tiendas gourmet e incluso un mercado. Fuera del edificio encontrarás la estatua de Ghandi con vistas al puente.

San Francisco's Cable Car / El tranvía de San Francisco ($6 each way/6$ por trayecto)

You can't miss this experience in San Francisco! First watch the cable car turn around at Powell & Market Street but don't try to get on it just yet if you don't want to wait for over 2 hours! Just take a walk up the hill, take some pictures of some of the San Francisco hearts at Union Square and just take a walk along Powell Street. Turn to the left at Washington or Jackson and take the cable car with Powell/Hyde Street on it (red line) to take you to our next stop in this list. If the cable car is still too full, take a right turn on Hyde and take the ride whenever you can! You can buy the ticket once you are on it!

No te puedes perder esta experiencia. En primer lugar observa como cambian de forma manual el sentido del tranvía en la esquina de Powell con Market Street. Mejor no intentes subir en este punto ya que se forma una cola de hasta dos horas...Simplemente camina hacia el norte por Powell Street, para en Union Square para hacer algunas fotos de los corazones que están repartidos por la plaza, y luego gira a la izquierda en Washington o Jackson Street y ahora sí, súbete en el tranvía en cualquiera de las paradas que veas. Si el tranvía sigue estando lleno, cógelo en cualquier otra parada... El ticket lo puedes comprar una vez estés subido.

Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 & Ghirardelli Square

Whether you have kids or you are a couple or you are traveling alone, this is the perfect place to spend an evening or even a day. There are lots of places to eat, you can play some typical fair games or just watch the sunset with the sea lions at Pier 39. Don't eat too much, a huge ice cream or a hot chocolate awaits at Ghirardelli's.

Tanto si viajáis con niños, como si viajáis en pareja o si eres un viajero solitario, este es un lugar perfecto para pasar una tarde o incluso un día completo. Hay multitud de sitios para comer, podrás jugar a los típicos juegos de feria o simplemente disfrutar del atardecer en el Pier 39 con la compañía de los simpáticos leones marinos. No comas demasiado, un enorme helado o un buen chocolate caliente te espera en Ghirardelli's.

Lombard Street

This is not just a unique place, it is free of charge too! And also a very famous spot of the city. It is usually crowded, especially for cars driving down the road, but you can walk down and try to take your best shot of the street from the other side. It is especially pretty in spring and summer as it is full with flowers.

Este no es solo un lugar único sino que además es gratuito! Además de ser un punto muy famoso en la ciudad. Normalmente está lleno de turistas, especialmente de coches bajando por ella, pero puedes caminar tranquilamente por la acera e intentar hacer la mejor foto que puedas al final de esta. Es especialmente bonito en primavera y verano cuando la calle está a rebosar de flores.

Coit Tower ($8 for non-residents, 6$ for residents / 8$ la entrada para no residentes, 6$ para residentes)

Another symbol of the city that you just can't miss! We love walking to it, enjoying the views from those unbelievable steep streets. If you love view points then you shouldn't miss this one. You can admire some of the murals before you enter. If you are not interested on paying the entry fee, it is still worth taking a look of the tower from outside.

Este es otro símbolo de la ciudad que no te puedes perder. A nosotros nos encanta caminar hasta este lugar y poder disfrutar de las vistas de esas increíbles calles empinadas. Puedes admirar algunos de sus murales antes de subir a la torre. Si no te interesa pagar la entrada, merece la pena acercarse a la torre y observarla desde fuera.

Painted Ladies

I had to visit San Francisco twice to finally visit this place, after all those years watching Full House during my childhood! There is a reason for this place to appear in every souvenir shop. It is the perfect place to watch the sunset. The higher you walk up in the park the better you will see the houses with the skyline. These are the views you only get in places with hills, so when you are tired of walking up and down around the city, think about the views you are going to get at the end of the road!

He necesitado dos visitas a San Francisco para poder visitar las famosas Painted Ladies! No puedo creerlo, después de tantos años viendo la serie 'Padres Forzosos' durante mi infancia! Ahora entiendo porque este lugar aparece en todas las tiendas de souvenirs... Es el lugar perfecto para ver el atardecer. Mientras más alto subas por la colina del parque, mejores serán las vistas de las Painted Ladies y el Skyline de la ciudad en el horizonte. Ten en cuenta que las mejores vistas que tengas de San Francisco serán siempre desde lo alto de sus muchas colinas, así que cuando estés cansado de subir, piensa en la recompensa que te espera al final,

Alcatraz (tickets from $20 to $88, depends on the tour, you need to book in advance!/ Entradas desde 20 a 80$, dependiendo del tour, necesitas reservar con antelación!)

The good news are, you can see it from many locations around the city but if you are really curious and don't want to miss this experience, take a look to the different tickets and decide what's best for you!

La buena noticia es que puedes admirar Alcatraz desde muchos puntos de la ciudad, pero si realmente estás interesado y no quieres perderte esta experiencia, echa un vistazo a las diferentes entradas y decide cual sería la mejor opción para tí.

Town Hall / Ayuntamiento

Walk along Market Street to visit the markets close to the Town Hall. There is a nice walk around the building where the politician Harvey Milk was sadly killed. There is also an interesting monument with several statues and some tables where you can sit on a sunny day.

Camina por Market Street para visitar los mercados cercanos al Town Hall. Hay un agradable paseo alrededor del edificio en el que el político Harvey Milk fue tristemente asesinado. Hay además un monumento interesante con diferentes estatuas y algunas mesas y sillas en las que sentarse y disfrutar de un día soleado.

Twin Peaks

This place is a must! Whether you dare to walk all the way up or you rather take the easy path and go by bus, you will love this place. A good option is to go up by bus and walk down afterwards. Admire the city from this unique and epic view point... No need to say this is also a great spot for the sunset!

Este lugar es de visita obligada! Puedes atreverte a caminar hasta lo alto de la colina o bien tomar el camino fácil y coger el bus. Una buena opción es una mezcla de ambas: Subir en autobús y bajar a pie. Desde este punto podrás admirar toda la ciudad desde el mítico mirador... No hace falta decir que es un lugar espectacular para el atardecer.

Chinatown

This is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the country and the largest one outside of Asia. In my personal opinion it is also one of the most charming ones. You can enter through the Dragon's Gate to start searching for cheap souvenirs. But don't just visit this part of town to go shopping, walk around it in the morning to see locals playing chest, enjoy a Chinese meal in one of the many restaurants and just enjoy this cultural experience of walking through it. At the end of this neigborhood you will end up with views to one of the most distinctive buildings of the city, the Transamerica building.

Este es uno de los barrios chinos más antiguos del país y el más grande fuera de Asia. Sinceramente pienso que es además uno de los barrios chinos con más encanto. Puedes entrar al barrio a través de su famosa Puerta del Dragón y comenzar a buscar souvenirs baratos. Pero no te limites sólo a hacer compras, camina por él durante la mañana para observar a los locales jugando al ajedrez, disfruta de la comida china en alguno de los muchos restaurantes... En definitiva, disfruta de la experiencia cultural que ofrece este lugar tan peculiar. Al final de este barrio te encontrarás con vistas a uno de los edificios más característicos de esta ciudad, el Transamerica.

North Beach (Little Italy)

The perfect place to have some coffee and cake after walking there. It is also a good choice if you are craving some Italian food. This is just another beautiful neighborhood of this wonderful city.

Este es un lugar ideal para tomar un café y un trozo de tarta después de un largo paseo. Es además una gran opción para poder probar los platos tradicionales italianos. Otro maravilloso barrio en esta maravillosa ciudad.

Haight-Ashbury

If you like vintage clothes and looking for old CD's and vinyls, this is the place for you! There are lots of second hand stores full of treasures and full of eccentric clothes from the happy flower era. Take a look through all the music shops, the biggest I remember is Amoeba Music but there are many more. After checking some book stores and the pretty colorful houses, get something to eat or drink around here, all shops are so unique inside.

Si te gusta la ropa vintage y buscar vinilos y CDs viejos, este es tu lugar! Este barrio está repleto de tiendas de segunda mano llenas de tesoros escondidos y ropa excéntrica de la época hippie. Echa un vistazo a sus tiendas de música. Si no recuerdo mal, la más grande era Amoeba Music, pero hay muchas más. Después de haber echado un vistazo a las librerías y a las coloridas casas de la zona puedes comer o beber algo en sus locales con decoración interior única.

Castro

San Francisco has always been such a controversial city. You can walk from the district where the hippie movement started to where the gay movement was born in less than half an hour. This is definitely the city of freedom and you can feel it too. Nobody cares or feels ashame for wearing the strangest things. In this part of the city you might see half naked people around, well, this might happen anywhere in the city really, it is not that rare... Check out some shops and have fun just looking at things that people actually wear, you might find something for you too! Walk up and down the hill, just take a look around, and if you walk around at night you will see the ''darkest'' side of this cute and interesting neighborhood.

San Francisco siempre ha sido una ciudad de lo más polémica. En cuestión de minutos caminando pasas del barrio donde el movimiento hippie comenzó, al barrio donde el movimiento gay nació. Es sin duda la ciudad de la libertad y se respira en el ambiente. No te sorprendas si por el barrio de Castro te encuentras con alguien medio desnudo caminando con total normalidad, algo nada raro hasta en las zonas más transitadas de a ciudad. Visita las tiendas de la zona y sorpréndete observando a los locales y sus vestimentas. Quizás encuentres algo para ti! Si te das un paseo por la noche podrás descubrir el lado ''más oscuro'' de este divertido y curioso barrio.

Mission Dolores Park

Between Dolores Heights and Mission District you will find this park. Another perfect location to watch the sunset after a long day walking. Lay down on the grass and relax while watching the sun sinking in the skyline (choose a high location!). After that you can walk around this colorful neighborhood looking at the many graffitis

Entre los barrios de Dolores Heights y Mission district encontrarás este parque. Otro lugar perfecto para admirar el atardecer tras un largo día de caminata. Túmbate en el cesped y relájate mientras el sol se esconde en el horizonte (elige un punto alto del parque!). Tras esto, puedes caminar por este barrio tan colorido y echar un vistazo a los innumerables graffitis.

Golden Gate Park

Weekends at this huge park are anything but boring. There are several places to visit: the Botanical Garden, the Japanese Tea Garden, Tulip Gardens, an aquarium, museums and also many free other activities such as baseball, golf, biking, skating, even Sunday Roller Disco Parties! The park is full with picnic areas where locals celebrate all kinds of things or just play ball. It is definitely a Californian experience to explore this park.

Los fines de semana en este inmenso parque son de todo menos aburridos. Hay muchos lugares que visitar: Jardín botánico, Jardín Japonés de Té, Jardines de tulipanes, el acuario, museos, además de muchas otras actividades gratuitas como baseball, golf, montar en bicicleta, patinar, incluso una fiesta disco en patines los domingos! El parque dispone de muchas áreas para hacer picnics donde los locales celebran todo tipo de eventos o simplemente juegan a la pelota. Sin duda es toda una experiencia californiana visitar este parque.

Baker Beach & Marshall's Beach / Las playas de Baker & Marshall

San Francisco is full of amazing view points and places, don't forget to walk along the coast and explore the different beaches with wonderful views of the Golden Gate and barely visited by tourists. You can enjoy most of the view points all to yourself. We hope you enjoyed this post as much as we did writing it. It was supposed to be shorter but I kept adding more and more places. I could go on about this city for days!

San Francisco está lleno de lugares asombrosos con vistas únicas. No olvides caminar por la costa y explorar las diferentes playas, que además ofrecen vistas espectaculares y no tan conocidas del puente Golden Gate. Puedes disfrutar de estos lugares prácticamente a solas.. Esperamos que hayas disfrutado con este post tanto como nosotros escribíendolo. Iba a ser mucho más breve pero no paraba de añadir más y mas sitios. Podría pasarme días solo hablando de esta ciudad!
