Getting there / Llegando a El Calafate

Argentina is so big and has so much to offer that a few hours in an airplane means, you can go from the humid and suffocating jungle to the cold and lonely Patagonia. That is exactly what we did, we flew from Puerto Iguazú to El Calafate, the world's capital of glaciers and one of the last cities of the world to get to Antartica. Our flight from Puerto Iguazú to El Calafate (with transfer in Buenos Aires) was more chaotic than what we had expected. The first flight Puerto Iguazú - Buenos Aires was cancelled but luckily we could get on the next flight a few minutes later, and the same plane would take us later to El Calafate. In the second flight, right at the moment of the take off there was a technical problem: one of the gates appeared as opened. This meant, another cancellation of the flight, so we had to switch planes again. This time we had a delay of 4 to 5 hours. Argentina es tan grande y con tanto que ofrecer, que en un ´rato´ de avion puedes pasar de la húmeda y sofocante jungla al frio y la soledad de la patagonia. Y eso es justamente lo que hemos hecho, desplazarnos desde Puerto Iguazú hacia El Calafate, la autoproclamada capital mundial de los glaciares y una de las últimas ciudades del mundo antes de llegar a la Antártida. El trayecto Puerto Iguazú - El Calafate (con escala en Buenos Aires) ha sido más accidentado de lo que hubieramos querido. El primer vuelo Puerto Iguazú - Buenos Aires ha sido cancelado pero por suerte hemos podido entrar en un vuelo que salía poco después. Ese mismo avión debía ser el que nos llevase más tarde desde Buenos Aires a El Calafate pero en el momento del despegue apareció un fallo técnico, uno de los mandos indicaba al piloto que una puerta estaba abierta en el avión. Esto provocó la cancelación del mismo y el consiguiente cambio de avión. Todo esto se tradujo en un retraso total de 4 a 5 horas.

El Calafate

As we get closer to El Calafate during sunset, we can see the turquoise waters of the Argentinian Lake, located very close to the city. Finally, as we get out of the airplane we get to feel the fresh breeze we were so anxious to feel. We are back! once again in Patagonia and feeling very grateful we could come back. We will spend three days in El Calafate, two of them to walk around, try the famous Patagonian lamb, get closer to the Argentinian Lake, chill out and of course, one whole day to visit the impressive glacier Perito Moreno. Ya llegando a El Calafate, y a pesar de estar anocheciendo, se puede apreciar el color turquesa del impresionante Lago Argentino, que está situado junto a la ciudad. Nada más salir del avión pudimos experimentar esa ola de frescor que tanto esperábamos. Ahora si que si, estamos de nuevo en la Patagonia, y muy felices por ello. Vamos a pasar 3 días en El Calafate. Dos de ellos los queremos invertir en pasear por la ciudad, probar el famoso cordero patagónico, hacer alguna escapada al Lago Argentino, descansar un poco, y por supuesto el plato fuerte, un día entero para visitar el impresionante glaciar Perito Moreno.

The quaint city of El Calafate has a healthy environment. Like all main streets in Argentina, the main street in El Calafate couldn't be any other than San Martin Avenue. Here you can find anything you need (cheap and expensive restaurants, clothes shops, touristic agencies, souvenirs, etc). Just a walk away there it is, the Argentinian Lake to enjoy some beautiful views of the mountains and the snowy peaks on the horizon. It is a nice and quite walk to get there. But of course, this place is not only about relaxing and taking quite walks. We are also looking for some Rock&Roll and that is what the glacier Perito Moreno has to offer. This well-known glacier is located inside of the Glaciers National Park, around 1,5 hours away from El Calafate. La ciudad de El Calafate es bastante pintoresca y con un ambiente muy sano. La arteria principal de la ciudad, como no podía ser de otra forma, es la Avenida San Martín, y aquí encontrais todo lo que buscais (restaurantes caros y baratos, tiendas de ropa, supermercados, agencias de turismo, souvenirs, etc). Además, a un ratito caminando llegaréis al Lago Argentino desde el que tendréis unas vistas maravillosas de las montañas y picos nevados que se ven en el horizonte. Es un paseo tranquilo y que bien merece la pena. Pero bueno, no todo va a ser descanso y paseos tranquilos. También buscamos algo de Rock&Roll y eso es justamente lo que el glaciar Perito Moreno nos ofrece. El glaciar Perito Moreno se encuentra dentro del Parque Nacional Los Glaciares y está situado a unas 1,5 horas de El Calafate.

Perito Moreno

There are several activities you can do in this ice giant: Boat trips to get closer to the impressive walls, the wooden walkways and you can even hike over the glacier! The main attraction is of course, hikng over the glacier and we couldn't miss it. This activity is anything but cheap, there is only one agency that is allowed to do the hikes. In a mopoly they can impose the price they like, and if you travel all the way to the end of the world to do this, you are going to pay with your eyes closed, just like we did. At least the company, called HieloYAventura, offers a good service and the organization is excellent.

Son varias las actividades que podéis realizar en torno a este gigante de hielo: Paseos naúticos para ver sus paredes de cerca, admirarlo desde las pasarelas de madera, caminar sobre el mismísimo glaciar... La actividad estrella es, claro está, caminar sobre el glaciar, y eso es lo que nosotros hicimos, pero ojo, no es barato. Tan sólo existe una empresa con el permiso para poder realizar caminatas sobre el glaciar, y ya se sabe, cuando existe monopolio, no hay competencia, y hay que adaptarse a los precios que se impongan. Y cualquiera que viaja al fin del mundo para hacerlo va a pagar sin pensarlo, como hicimos nosotros. Esta empresa es HieloYAventura y lo cierto es que la organización es excelente.

There are two options to do the trek: one is the Minitrekking (around 1 hour over the ice) and the other one is the Big Ice (around 3 hours hiking on ice). There are a few activities besides the hike on both tours included in the price. The Minitrekking is pretty expensive, truth to be told, and for the Big Ice you almost need to ask for a loan =). We chose the Minitrekking due to our economic situation. Existen dos opciones para caminar sobre el glaciar, una es el MInitrekking (aproximadamente 1 hora sobre el hielo) y la otra es el Big Ice (unas 3 horas sobre el hielo). Además de caminar sobre el hielo, son más las actividades que ya vienen incluidas en el precio. El MInitrekking es bastante caro, la verdad, mientras que para realizar el Big Ice casi que tienes que pedir un crédito al banco xD. Nosotros, por motivos económicos, nos decantamos, claro está, por el Minitrekking.

Like I always say, a great day often begins waking up very early. We've been dreaming about this moment for a couple of years now, to visit the great Perito Moreno, and today we were going to make it happen. The van comes to pick us up and take us to a bigger bus. The views on the way to the park are spectacular. Alicia is not able to sit for long, she keeps moving from one sit to another to take the best shots. Once we are on the entrance of the park, some of the workers explain the basic rules, and of course they charge us the entrance fees, not cheap and also not included in the price of the tour. A couple of minutes later, the bus arrives to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, the starting point. We get on a boat to get closer to the glacier and we watch the glacier from the water. No words to express this. Como ya he dicho más veces, todo gran día comienza con un madrugón, y este no iba a ser menos. Llevábamos ya algunos años soñando con visitar el Perito Moreno y hoy eso se iba a hacer realidad. Pasan a recogernos en una van y de ahí nos transfieren a un autobus más grande. El trayecto hasta la entrada del parque es espectacular. Alicia no para quieta y se pasa el trayecto cambiando de un lado a otro del autobús buscando las mejores fotos. Una vez en la entrada del parque nacional, algunos de los funcionarios que allí trabajan suben al autobús a darnos las instrucciones básicas de comportamiento dentro del parque y, por supuesto, a cobrar la entrada, que no es barata, y que además no está incluida en el precio de la excursión. Desde este punto ya sólo son unos minutos más en autobús hasta llegar al Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, que va a ser el punto donde tomemos la embarcación para llegar hasta el glaciar. Desde aquí conseguimos ver el glaciar. Sin palabras.

From the boat we get some great views of the south wall of the glacier and we arrive to the closest point to the glacier. Just as we touch the ground we hear what it seems a thunder, and we all think "storm", but it isn't. That noise was the huge amount of ice falling into Rico lake's waters. Another shocking noise is the one caused by the wind crashing on the walls of the glacier. We take some pictures from this angle and they divide us into groups to start a small trek to the glacier. Once there, they put on our feet the crampons and now we are ready to get on the ice. The hike is fun and has some amazing views. La embarcación nos lleva hasta el punto desde el que vamos a acceder al glaciar. Durante el trayecto logramos tener las mejores vistas de la pared sur del glaciar. Nada más poner los pies en tierra firme, escuchamos un ruido similar al de un trueno y pensamos ´tormenta´, pero no, nada de eso, es el ruido constante de los témpanos de hielo cayendo a las aguas del lago Rico. Otro ruido estremecedor que oiréis será el del viento chocando contra las paredes del glaciar. Aprovechamos para hacer algunas fotos desde este punto y poco después nos dividen en grupos e iniciamos una pequeña caminata hasta el inicio del glaciar. Una vez ahí, nos ponen los crampones y ya estamos listos para entrar al hielo. El paseo por el hielo es divertido y con magníficas vistas.

The truth is the glacier is very crowded, there are so many groups at the same time hiking over it that you rarely get the feeling your group is alone on it. Fortunately we had done it before on another glacier in Chile (glacier Grey, you can read about it clicking HERE). Even if that glacier wasn't as impressive as Perito Moreno, the experience was much more authentic. However, we do think it is worth doing it at Perito Moreno too.

Por poner una pega, debo decir que está demasiado masificado. Apenas se tiene la sensación de estar sólo sobre el hielo. Tuvimos la suerte de caminar por otro glaciar en Chile (el glaciar Grey, puedes leer sobre ello haciendo click AQUÍ) y si bien es cierto que no era tan espectacular como el Perito Moreno, también es cierto que la experiencia fue mucho más auténtica. No obstante, merece la pena, por supuesto.

Back to mainland we use the time off to eat (lunch is not included in the price either, so you need to take some sandwiches with you) and again on the boat they take us back to the starting point, to Puerto Bajo las Sombras. They take us from here to our last stop for the day, the famous wooden walkways. From these walkways the views are stunning. Here you can see the east side of the glacier and you can even see how it expands to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the one feeding 48 glaciers among which is Perito Moreno. If you are lucky enough you will be able to watch the huge pieces of ice falling down into the water and see the waves this produces.

Ya de nuevo sobre tierra firme, aprovechamos para comer (la comida tampoco está incluida en el precio, así que llévate bocadillos) y de nuevo en barco nos llevan hasta el punto de partida, el Puerto Bajo las Sombras. Desde ahí nos transfieren al que será la última parada del día, las famosas plataformas. Desde las plataformas vas a tener unas vistas espectaculares de la cara este del glaciar y además podrás ver como este se propaga hasta los campos de hielo Patagónico Sur, el que da origen a 48 glaciares, entre ellos el Perito Moreno. Con algo de suerte verás enormes pedazos de hielo desprenderse y podrás contemplar el oleaje que esto produce.

It is hard to picture the actual dimensions of Perito Moreno, but once they tell you it is bigger than the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires, with an average height of 74 meters (240 ft) above the surface and a total ice depth of 170 meters (558 ft)... Only then you understand how big it actually is. It is absolutely amazing to be able to see it with your own eyes: the never ending massive extension of ice, you feel so small... The more you travel the more you appreciate this fascinating world. Es díficil imaginar las dimensiones reales del Perito Moreno, pero una vez te cuentan que es más grande que la capital argentina, Buenos Aires, con una media de altura de 74 metros sobre la superficie y una profundidad total de 170 metros... Solo entonces comprendes lo grande que es. Es simplemente increíble poder verlo con tus propios ojos: la cantidad ingente de hielo que nunca acaba, te sientes tan pequeño... Cuanto más viajas más te das cuenta de lo fascinante que es el mundo.
