(EN/ES) El Chaltén, Argentina

After 4 hours on a bus, a short period of time taking into account the long distances in Argentina, we arrive to the impressive Chalten. We couldn't have a better day today. We can spot Fitz Roy from the distance at the end of the road. I can't help it to take hundreds of pictures, I can't believe the stunning scenery right in front of me.

Tras 4 horas en autobús, un trayecto muy breve para lo que son las distancias en Argentina, llegamos al imponente Chaltén, y no podríamos tener mejor recibimiento. Ya desde la distancia podemos ver Fitz Roy al final de la carretera, yo me vuelvo loca con las fotos, incrédula ante la imagen tan impresionante frente a mí.

Arriving to our Destination / Llegando a nuestro destino

All hike and landscape lovers will understand my reaction. Patagonia is well-known for its changing and unpredictible weather. Few lucky people get to see it under these conditions: cartoon-like-sky ( I call it "The Simpsons' sky"), that means vivid blue skies and white cotton candy clouds. After our visit to the Chilean Patagonia in 2016 we are very aware of how lucky we are, so I have to take advantage of the circumstances and capture the moment... We are eager to get out and walk through these beautiful landscapes.

Los amantes del senderismo y de los paisajes entenderán mi reacción, y es que la Patagonia se caracteriza por su clima cambiante e impredecible, y son pocos los afortunados que se lo encuentran así: con un cielo propio de dibujos animados (yo lo llamo "El cielo de Los Simpson"), es decir, cielo azul intenso con nubes que parecen de algodón. Después de nuestro paso por la Patagonia chilena en 2016 somos muy conscientes de nuestra suerte y aprovecho la ocasión para captar el momento... Estamos ansiosos por recorrernos estos paisajes qué tanto anhelábamos volver a ver.

Before we arrive to the Bus Station, the bus stops shortly at the Visitor Center to explain all the rules and give us a brief information about the main trails... Good news for those who want to visit El Chalten, the entrance is free! (we didn't expect it at all, in Chile you do need to pay!). We walk from the bus station to the city center just like any backpacker would do, taxis are for tourists and travelers who can afford it. On our way to the hostel we don't even feel the weight on our shoulders, that is how happy we are to be back here.

Antes de dejarnos, el autobús hace una breve parada en el centro de visitantes para explicarnos las normas y darnos a conocer más sobre los senderos... y buenas noticias para los que quieran visitar El Chaltén, no hay que pagar entrada al parque! (en Chile sí es necesario, por eso nos sorprendió!). Como buenos mochileros, nos vamos andando de la estación de autobuses al centro, los taxis son para turistas o para viajeros con dinero. Así que cargados con nuestras mochilas, nos ponemos en marcha, y con lo contentos que estamos de volver a estar aquí, ni notamos el peso.

At the Hostel / En el Hostal

We arrive to our hostel, excited to get in our 6-people room (20€/night per person). Patagonia is not famous for its cheap prices and this is the best way to reduce costs. Also, the environment couldn't be better, full of young healthy people who enjoy the early hikes and the peacefulness at night.

Llegamos a nuestro hostal, habitación de 6 personas (20€ por persona y noche) y tan felices, la Patagonia no es famosa por sus bajos precios, y esta es la mejor manera de reducir costes, además de tener un ambiente muy sano de gente joven que disfruta de las caminatas bien temprano y de la tranquilidad por la noche.

Tips to save money in Patagonia / Consejos para ahorrar dinero en la Patagonia

How to save money during your stay in Patagonia by following these very simple steps:

• Book a hostel rather than a Hotel and do it in advance, but most importantly, make sure it has an equipped kitchen available for guests. Sure hotels are nicer, but the difference in the price per night will make a huge impact on your budget if you are staying long. And if you like the privacy you can always book a private room at a higher cost in a hostel too. Having a kitchen will help you stay within your budget while eating healthy. The supermarkets are not cheap, but the restaurants can be a ripper... This way if you do eat out, you will enjoy it even more, you have no idea how much we enjoyed our diner at "La Waflería"!

• Prepare sandwiches and buy snacks at the grocery store, rather than buying a Lunch Box (typical at hotels). Grocery stores in Patagonia are probably more expensive than anywhere else in Argentina, but it definitely will be cheaper than a lunch box, and you get to choose what you like!

La mejor manera de ahorrar en costes durante tu estancia en la Patagonia es siguiendo estos sencillos pasos:

• Reserva un hostel en vez de un hotel y hazlo con tiempo, pero lo más importante de todo, asegúrate de que disponga de una cocina equipada para el uso de los huéspedes. Claro que los hoteles son más bonitos, pero la diferencia en el precio por noche tendrá un impacto enorme en tu presupuesto si piensas quedarte bastantes días. Si te gusta tener privacidad, en los hostales suelen tener habitaciones privadas a un precio superior. Tener una cocina a tu disposición abaratará muchísimo tu estancia a la vez que te alimentas bien. Los supermercados no son baratos, pero los restaurantes ya ni te cuento... De esta forma si sales a comer fuera, lo disfrutarás mucho más, no os podéis imaginar cuanto disfrutamos de nuestra cena en "La Waflería"!

• Prepara sándwiches y compra snacks en el supermercado antes de comenzar tus caminatas, en vez de comprar el "Lunch Box" (muy propio de los hoteles). Los supermercados de la Patagonia son seguramente los más caros de toda Argentina, pero será más barato que comprar un "Lunch Box" y puedes elegir lo que más te guste.

Self-guided Treks in El Chalten / Trekkings por tu Cuenta en El Chaltén

We've been looking forward to get back to this remote part of the world for a long time, so we can't stay in for one more second. We have to get out at least for a short hike... Here we leave some information about the hikes we chose to do:

Llevamos demasiado tiempo con ganas de volver a esta parte remota del planeta y este día no se puede dejar pasar sin salir a hacer aunque sea una caminata cortita... Así que allá vamos! Aquí os dejamos una breve explicación de los trekkings que elegimos hacer:

Viewpoints El Condor and El Aguila / Miradores El Cóndor y El Águila

The trail to both viewpoints begin at the visitor center, where you can tell the people really love what they do, they are so nice! The viewpoints are named after these birds, condors and eagles, due to their often sights. We get to see many of them. To get to the Viewpoint El Aguila the trail is quite steep but achievable. The panoramic views are beautiful. As we get back to the visitor center we feel like we can walk more, so we walk across town to do the following trail.

El sendero comienza en el centro de visitantes, donde se nota que disfrutan de su trabajo, son increíblemente amables! El mirador del cóndor recibe ese nombre porque estas aves se dejan ver a menudo, y tenemos la suerte de ver varios de ellos, además de águilas. Para llegar al mirador del águila la pendiente es más pronunciada pero asequible. Las vistas panorámicas son bien bonitas. Al bajar vemos que podemos con más y nos cruzamos todo el pueblo para hacer la siguiente caminata.

Chorrillo del Salto

This trail takes you to a beautiful waterfall and it's quite easy. We were surprised by it, this 20 meter-high waterfall is hidden in the forest, surrounded by vegetation. This trail is very different to the previous one, there is intense green vegetation while the other one is a more interesting trail for those seeking panoramic views and the bird watching experience. Though you might be as lucky as we were and see a woodpecker in the forest on your way to the waterfall.

Este sendero lleva a una preciosa cascada por un camino sencillo. La cascada nos sorprende, con sus 20 metros de alto y escondida en el bosque, rodeada de vegetación. Este sendero es muy diferente al anterior, hay mucha más vegetación de color verde intenso, mientras que el otro sendero es más interesante para aquellos que buscan vistas panorámicas y el avistamiento de aves. Aunque puede que tengas la misma suerte que nosotros y veas a un pájaro carpintero de camino a la cascada.

Laguna de los Tres

This is without a doubt a MUST if you are visiting El Chalten. This hike is the reason why people come from all over the world to this remote place on earth. Choose the first sunny day you have to do it, to make sure you see the stunning views that await at the end of the trail. It takes around 4 hours (10 km/ 6.2 miles) to complete one way, and even if many websites consider it a hike of medium-difficulty, I'd say the last hour is for sure high difficulty, and everyone going up that day agreed with me. =D

Este es sin duda OBLIGATORIO si visitas El Chaltén. Esta caminata es la razón por la cuál gente de todas partes del mundo viene a hasta a este remoto lugar del planeta. Escoge el primer día soleado que tengas para hacerlo, y así asegurarte de disfrutar las vistas tan impresionantes que te esperan al al final del sendero. Se tardan unas 4 horas (10 km) solo la ida, y aunque muchas de las páginas web lo consideran de dificultad media, puedo asegurarte que la última hora es más bien de dificultad alta, y todo el mundo que subió aquel día estaba de acuerdo conmigo. =D

As I was saying, it is a perfect trail to do on a sunny day, not only because of the views up there, but because of the stunning views you have during the whole trail (take a look to the pictures and you'll understand!). The best is that the trail is fairly easy for the most part, it is just the last part when you have an ascension of 1 km (0.62 miles) that it does get challenging... but the views from the top are worth every minute of it. Once you reach the top you can touch ice-cold water of the glacier lagoon and enjoy the most amazing views of Fitz Roy while eating your well-deserved lunch! You might even see the clever foxes trying to get some of your food, try not to leave a thing to avoid changing these animals' feeding habits!

Como os decía, es el sendero perfecto para hacerlo en un día soleado, no solo por las vistas desde arriba sino por las vistas que se tienen durante todo el camino (solo con mirar las fotos lo entenderás!). Lo mejor de todo es que el sendero es bastante fácil, a excepción de la última parte, cuando comienza la ascensión de 1 km, ahí se convierte en un auténtico reto... pero las vistas desde allí arriba hacen que cada uno de esos minutos de esfuerzo merezcan la pena. Una vez llegas al final del sendero, puedes acercarte a tocar el agua helada de la laguna del glaciar y disfrutar de las impresionantes vistas del Fitz Roy, mientras engulles tu merecidísimo almuerzo! Incluso puede que veas zorros espabilados intentando conseguir algún resto de tu comida, pero intenta no dejar nada para evitar que cambien los hábitos de alimentación de estos animales!

La Loma del Pliegue Tumbado

This hike of high difficulty has access to a 360º viewpoint, therefore the importance of having the best possible weather the day you decide to do it too. Like the previous trail, it takes around 4 hours (10 km/ 6.2 miles) to complete one way. It also has a 1 km/ 0.62 miles ascension, but in this case is a more progressive one. If you are planning on going to the camp at Laguna Toro, it is mandatory to register at the visitor center, as it is a not well-signed trail and of high difficulty.

Este trekking de dificultad alta, tiene acceso a un mirador de 360º, por lo que también es importante tener el mejor tiempo posible el día que decidas llegar a él. Como el anterior sendero, este dura alrededor de 4h (10 km) solo la ida. También tiene una ascensión de 1 km, pero esta es más progresiva. Si se quiere ir al campamento de Laguna Toro, es obligatorio registrarse en el centro de visitantes, ya que se trata de un sendero sin marcar y de dificultad alta.

After going through a zone with wild cows we arrive to a viewpoint were you can experience the strong Patagonic wind. We are quite tired and we see the "loma" with a steep climb, and after thinking through if we did want to go up, we decided to do it! The sky was clearing up even more, and now that we came all the way here we can't just go back without seeing the views from the top. So right after lunch we start our way to the top.

Tras cruzar una zona con vacas salvajes, llegamos a un mirador donde puedes comprobar por ti mismo la fuerza del viento patagónico. Estamos bastante cansados y vemos la loma con una fuerte subida, y después de mucho pensarnos si subir, decidimos hacerlo! El cielo se ha despejado más, y ya que hemos llegado hasta aquí no podemos darnos la vuelta sin más. Queremos ver las vistas desde la cima, y eso hacemos nada más comer y reponer fuerzas.

The wind is even stronger on the top, the altitude at this point is almost 5000 feet (1500 meters) over sea level. The views are spectacular, even if Cerro Torre is hiding behind the clouds, which unfortunately is usually the case. In this area there is even snow sometimes in the summertime. Aware of the magnificent place we have before us and how blessed we are to have this weather, we spend a while at the summit just enjoying the views. Now is time to go back down, we still have a long way to go and we didn't start as early today as we usually do.

El viento es incluso más fuerte en la cima, la altitud en este momento es de 1500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Las vistas son espectaculares, a pesar de que Cerro Torre se encuentra escondido tras las nubes, pero por desgracia esto suele ser la tónica general. En esta zona incluso se dan nevadas en verano. Conscientes del lugar en el que nos encontramos y la suerte que hemos tenido con el clima, pasamos un buen rato disfrutando de las vistas en la cima. Ahora toca bajar, nos queda bastante camino por delante y hoy no empezamos la caminata tan temprano como solemos hacer.

Laguna Torre y Mirador Maestri

Even though this hike is longer than the previous two hikes, it is much easier due to the reduced slope. The duration is pretty much the same, 4 hours to go both ways (around 11 km / 6.8 miles). The landscapes around you will surprise you every step of the way, as well as the views. It is worth it every second of your effort. On a sunny day Cerro Torre and the glaciers Torre and Grande await in all its glory.

Aunque esta caminata es mucho más larga que las dos anteriores, es mucho más sencilla dada la leve subida, y la duración es prácticamente la misma, 4 horas ida y vuelta (unos 11 km). Los paisajes a tu alrededor y las vistas no te dejarán indiferente, cada paso merece la pena el esfuerzo. En un día soleado Cerro Torre y los glaciares Torre y Grande te esperan en todo su esplendor.

Piedras Blancas

Some people go through this easier hike the same day they visit Fitz Roy, before they head back to the small village. We couldn't do it after the really steep way up (don't underestimate that last kilometer up!), so we decided to leave it for the last day in El Chalten, the day we were taking the bus in the evening to go to the next stop in Patagonia, Bariloche.

Este sencillo sendero hay quien lo hace el mismo día que va a ver Fitz Roy, antes de volver a la pequeña localidad. Nosotros por el agotamiento no fuimos capaces (no subestimes el último kilómetro de subida!) y decidimos por ello dejarlo para el último día, el día que cogíamos nuestro autobús hacia el siguiente destino de nuestro viaje por la Patagonia, Bariloche.

As I was saying, the hike is not difficult and it takes around 3 and a half hours, taking into account the time to go and come back (around 10 km / 6.2 miles). Most of the path is the same one that takes you to Fitz Roy. That explains why so many people do both on the same day. So the views of this peak will be visible all the way until you go deep into the forest where the lookout to see the glaciar awaits, well, that is if you have a nicer wheather than we did! But even on a cloudy day, if there is no fog in a closer distance, you should be able to see the glacier from the lookout. That is why we chose to leave this hike for our very last day. You will probably agree that not for being the last visit was the least impressive one, dont't you think?

Como decía, es un sendero de poca dificultad y dura unas tres horas y media contando ida y vuelta (unos 10 km). Gran parte del recorrido es el mismo que el sendero hasta Fitz Roy, por ello muchos aprovechan un día para ir a ambos. Las vistas de este pico serán visibles prácticamente todo el camino hasta adentrarte al bosque en el que se encuentra el mirador del glaciar, eso sí, si tenéis mejor tiempo que nosotros! Pero aún en un día nublado, si no hay niebla que cubra a pocos metros de distancia, lo normal es que se pueda ver el glaciar desde el mirador. Por esta razón nos pareció apropiado dejarla como última visita, aunque como se puede observar en las fotos, no por ser la última visita dejó de impresionarnos el paisaje, ¿no te parece?
