(EN) A quick visit, Paraguay / (ES) Una visita fugaz, Paraguay

We planned 3 days in Iguazu and we wanted to take all that time at the falls but the truth is, after the first 2 days we already visited every corner and did everything we wanted, so the question was: what to do next? To spend a day doing nothing wasn't an option and being so close to Paraguay and don't take a look... why not spend the day there? That is what we did! We wanted to visit the Monday Falls and the city Ciudad del Este. Habíamos planeado 3 días en Iguazú y pensábamos dedicárselo todo a las cataratas, pero lo cierto es que tras los dos primeros días habíamos visitado todo lo que queríamos, así que la pregunta era qué hacer. Tomarnos el día de descanso no era una opción, y además, estando tan cerquita de Paraguay... por qué no echar un vistazo? Y eso fue lo que hicimos. Nuestro objetivo era el de visitar los Saltos del Monday y Ciudad del Este.

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina - Presidente Franco, Paraguay We wake up very early and go to the harbor at Puerto Iguazu, where there is a ferry every hour to Presidente Franco in Paraguay. The ferry is a platform made of wood, around 35 square meters, which takes families in their cars from one place to another. We were actually the only ones taking the ferry without a car. Nos levantamos muy temprano y nos fuimos hasta el puerto de Puerto Iguazú, desde donde cada hora sale una barcaza hasta la localidad de Presidente Franco, ya en tierra paraguaya. La barcaza que nos llevó no es más que una plataforma de madera de unos 35 metros cuadrados que transporta familias en sus coches de un lado a otro. Nosotros éramos los únicos que iban a pie.

In only 15 minutes we crossed the river from Argentina to Paraguay. Once there we realized it wasn't that easy to go to our next destination, the Monday Falls. A taxi driver shows up, it is pretty obvious we are not from here and need a ride, so we manage to agree on a price. Alicia speaks pretending she comes from Argentina to avoid paying 10 times more. I feel so embarrassed but she keeps doing it. I should explain she is pretty bad imitating accents. We finally agree on a price, 450ARS to take us to Monday Falls and take us to Cuidad del Este afterwards. We think the price is fair, but I can't really tell if that awfull Argentinian accent helped at all. En tan sólo 15 minutos habíamos cruzado de Argentina a Paraguay y ya allí nos dimos cuenta de que ir a nuestro siguiente destino, los Saltos del Monday, no iba a ser tan sencillo. A todo esto aparece un taxi que nos ve la cara de: "y ahora qué hacemos2? y con él conseguimos acordar un precio. Alicia, para evitar ser timada, empieza a hablar con acento argentino. A mi se me cae la cara de verguenza, pero ella sigue. Hay que decir que Alicia es especialmente mala para los acentos. Finalmente acordamos el precio de 450ARS por llevarnos a los Saltos del Monday y de ahí a Ciudad del Este. Nos parece un buen precio, aunque yo no sabría decir si el horrible acento argentino de Alicia sirvió de algo.

Monday Falls / Salto del Monday In around 20 minutes drive the taxi dropped us at the entrance of the Monday Falls. It is a pretty place, absolutely worth visiting. The waterfall is impressive and was a surprise the story behind it. The guaranies (indiginous from Paraguay) used to pick up wood and leave it by the river. When the guaranies went back the following day, the currents of the river took their wood, giving the river the name of Monday, meaning in guarani "water that steals". En unos 20 minutos de taxi llegamos hasta la entrada de los Saltos del Monday. El lugar es muy bonito y bien merece la pena. La catarata impresiona, y la historia que ahí detrás sorprende. Resulta que los guaranies (indígenas de Paraguay) recogian madera y la dejaban a orillas del río. Cuando regresaban al día siguiente, la corriente del río se había llevado la madera, y por eso bautizaron al río como el río Monday, que en guaraní significa "agua que roba".

This place is almost empty, there are a few visitors around even being a spectacular waterfall. Of course the fact that it is so close to Iguazu Falls makes it hard to compete with them... However, comparisons are odious, so if you have the chance you should visit this place as well. El lugar está muy poco masificado y apenas se ven visitantes a pesar de la espectacularidad de la catarata. Pero claro, el problema es, cómo competir con las Cataratas de Iguazú... No obstante, las comparaciones siempre son odiosas así que si tenéis la oportunidad, visitad este lugar también.

Ciudad del Este After almost two hours the taxi driver came to pick us up. Just like we agreed, he took us to the city center of Ciudad del Este. This city is different to any other we've ever seen. It is located next to Foz Iguazu (Brazil), crossing the friendship bridge. This explains why you see so many people from Brazil around here, even in some places everything is in Portuguese and not in Spanish. Why is this such an interesting city? The main reason why it is so crowded it's because the foreigners don't pay any taxes, just like a Duty Free in the entire city. Después de casi dos horas nos vino a recoger nuestro amigo el taxista, que tal y como habíamos acordado, nos llevó hasta el centro de Ciudad del Este. Esta ciudad es bastante atípica. Se encuentra unida a Foz Iguazú (Brasil) por el puente de la amistad y eso hace que la ciudad esté llena de brasileños. Es más, en muchos lugares encontrarás todo en portugués y ni siquiera en español. Pero, qué hace atípica e interesante a esta ciudad? El hecho de que por ser extranjero no se pagan impuestos, algo así como un Duty Free pero en ciudad.

Don't try to find a historic center or anything like that, the only thing you will find around here are street markets and malls, people shopping everywhere and more malls... A very chaotic city where you have to skip the traffic in every corner, but the truth is, it is interesting to see it for a day. We would recommend to visit the Mall Monalisa and Paris. No intentéis buscar un centro histórico ni nada por el estilo, aquí lo que hay son puestos callejeros que invaden a los turistas y malls, malls y más malls... Además es una ciudad en la que reina el caos y hay que sortear el tráfico en cada esquina, pero lo cierto es que para un ratito, está divertido. Como recomendación os diríamos que visitéis el Mall Monalisa y el Mall Paris.

Once we had enough of this city, we take one of the buses to go to Puerto Iguazu. In about one hour we were back there. You can also go back to Puerto Iguazu taking a ferry from Presidente Franco. Una vez tuvimos suficiente de esta ciudad, nos subimos a uno de los autobuses que llevaban hasta Puerto Iguazú. En poco más de una hora ya estábamos de vuelta. El regreso también se puede realizar en barcaza desde el puerto de Presidente Franco.
