We are so excited to announce what we have been thinking about for months, or even for years. It was a continuous struggle with our selves to finally make the decision, probably the hardest decision we've ever made until this moment. But now that our families know it and accept it, and at work they've been informed, we want to say it out loud!! WE ARE GOING TO TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD FOR A WHOLE YEAR!!
Estamos muy emocionados de anunciar lo que llevamos meses, o se podría decir años, planteándonos. Ha sido una lucha interna continua tomar esta decisión, la decisión más difícil que hemos tomado hasta el momento. Pero ahora que nuestras familias lo saben y lo aceptan, y en el trabajo está todo dicho, queremos anunciarlo ya a gritos!! NOS VAMOS A VIAJAR ALREDEDOR DEL MUNDO DURANTE UN AÑO!!
We always told ourselves that we could never do such a thing, so we did our around the world trip in phases, or that is how I call it. In our travels we met a lot of people like us, creazy about traveling, who left everything behind to travel for a year... and we thought it'd be the most irresponsible thing to do in our situation. It is easy to quit a job you don't like, where you are exploited and can't stand the people around you day after day. In that case you have nothing to lose, when you get back you look for another job and if you are lucky you get a better job, and not only that, you lived an experience of a lifetime, a great adventure... a win-win situation.
Siempre nos hemos autoconvencido de que nosotros nunca podríamos hacerlo, así que hemos ido haciendo nuestra vuelta al mundo por etapas, como yo la llamo. En nuestros viajes hemos conocido mucha gente como nosotros, locos por los viajes, que dejaban todo y se iban a viajar por un año... y pensábamos que si lo hiciéramos nosotros sería una autentica irresponsabilidad. Es fácil dejar un trabajo que no te gusta, donde estás explotado y no aguantas a la gente que tienes a tu alrededor a diario. En ese caso no pierdes nada, a la vuelta buscas otro trabajo donde con suerte estés mejor, y habrás vivido un año de experiencias únicas, una gran aventura... sin duda todo ventajas.
Our decision was not as easy to take, was MUCH harder...after leaving Spain to look for better opportunities in Germany and finding a company with very good working conditions, even for Germans, how could we leave everything behind to travel for a year? it'd be so irresponsible... By good conditions we don't mean money, we are talking about: flexible working times, more vacation days a year, over time in exchange for days off... the dream of any traveler! Also the outstanding Corporative Culture, with good bosses and a friendly working environment that I never thought possible after my brief working experience in Spain... for all of this and more (our culture makes it harder as well- nobody from Spain would leave a good job ever... it is too hard to find...) we had a hard time before we decided to do this. However, the decision is already made, we are going to follow our dreams!
En nuestro caso, la decisión ha sido MUCHO más difícil...después de dejar España para buscar mejores oportunidades en Alemania y encontrar una empresa con muy buenas condiciones laborales, incluso para los mismos alemanes, ¿cómo íbamos a dejar todo por irnos un año? era sin duda una irresponsabilidad... Con buenas condiciones laborales no nos referimos al dinero, se trata de: flexibilidad de horarios, más vacaciones al año, horas extra acumuladas a cambio de días libres... el sueño de cualquier viajero! Además de una cultura empresarial envidiable, con jefes buenos y un ambiente laboral que no creía posible después de mi breve experiencia laboral en España... por todo esto y más (la cultura también afecta - cualquier español no quiere soltar un buen trabajo nunca... es demasiado difícil encontrarlo...) nos costó muchos quebraderos de cabeza seguir adelante con esto. Pero ya está decidido, vamos a cumplir nuestro sueño!
PLANNING VS. SPONTANEITY / PLANIFICACIÓN VS. ESPONTANEIDAD
The bad news are, we won't be able to visit all the places we wish to see, not even in several years of traveling. Luckily we know exactly which countries we'd like to visit and we planned already an estimated itinierary. You might think it is too much to prepare an itinierary for a whole year, but this way we will safe a lot of money on the journey itself and we will avoid lots of headhaches during the trip. Fortunately Julio is an expert in logistics and with his excel sheets we already have the approximate date of arrival to each country and the estimated period of time we will stay. But only the beginning of the trip will be already booked, we will book everything else as it gets closer.
Las malas noticias son las siguientes, ni en varios años de viaje podríamos ver todo lo que queremos. Pero por suerte tenemos claro los países que visitaremos y ya tenemos listo un itinerario aproximado. Puede parecer exagerado preparar un itinerario para todo un año, pero de esta manera podemos ahorrar muchísimo dinero en transporte y sobre todo ahorrarnos quebraderos de cabeza durante el viaje. Por suerte Julio es un experto en logística y con sus tablas excel, ya tenemos una estimación de cuando llegaríamos a cada país y el tiempo aproximado de estancia =). Por supuesto, solo el principio del viaje estará cerrado, y todo lo demás se irá reservando sobre la marcha.
Why is it so important to think through an itinierary and estimate the stay at each country? /
¿Por qué es tan importante pensar en un itinerario y estimar la estancia en cada país?
As I was saying, a year seems a very long time, but we believe it is a common mistake to just fly there without thinking a route through. To book a one way flight and just check information about the first country you are visiting, is in our opinion, the classical mistake beginners make. If we did learn something in the past years of travels is, if you want to travel without spending too much money and want to enjoy it as much as possible there, the more information you collect before your departure the better. If you travel without knowing where to go next, you will waste the most precious thing you own, your time! Or maybe these years in Germany created two control freaks! LOL... However we also think we have to leave room for spontaneity as well.
Como decía, un año parece mucho tiempo, pero consideramos que es un error común dejarse llevar y salir sin una ruta pensada. Reservar un vuelo de ida y sólo informarse sobre el primer país al que se llega es, en nuestra opinión, el clásico error del novato. Si algo hemos aprendido en los últimos años es que si quieres viajar barato y disfrutar en el lugar, cuanta más información se haya recavado antes de la salida mejor se aprovechará el viaje. Si viajas sin saber a dónde irás después, perderás lo más valioso que tienes, tu tiempo! O quizás estos años en Alemania nos han convertido en unos frikis del control! XD... A pesar de todo esto también pensamos que hay que dejar margen a la espontaneidad.
If you have your flight to the next country, but you find out there is a fascinating place and don't want to miss out? / ¿Y si tienes tu vuelo al próximo país, pero te enteras de un sitio impresionante que no te quieres perder?
You have to take into account that some places will be surprising and you will wish to stay longer, or some countries are not as easy to get around as you had read... so you will need more days than expected... or our usual mistake: plan everything without taking into account that you need to rest too! It might sound silly, but when you are as crazy as us about seeing everything you can easily forget to plan days for resting. This could end up causing problems among travel mates. Fortunately we get on well, but sometimes it happens that one of us feels more tired than the other one and ends up causing arguments.
Tienes que contar con que habrá destinos que te sorprendan y decidas estar más tiempo, o algunos países eran más fácil de visitar según leíste... pero vas a necesitar más días de los que esperabas... o nuestro error más común: dar por hecho que no necesitas descanso! Parece una tontería, pero cuando tienes las ansias de verlo todo como nos ocurre a nosotros, suele pasarse por alto y puede causar problemas con los compañeros de viaje. Nosotros por suerte nos compaginamos muy bien, pero se han dado casos en las que uno esta más agotado que el otro y el cansancio puede provocar discusiones.
Due to all of this, the itinierary will only be a guidence. It will help us to not stop for too long at some countries, to be able to visit many others. We have to be aware that we won't be able to see everything we want, we won't make it to some of the countries in the itinierary and there will always be landscapes, areas of the country and experiences that we will miss... but our biggest challenge will be to use some of our time to rest, even if we just want to go out and explore!
Por todo esto, el itinerario sólo será orientativo. Nos ayudará a no entretenernos demasiado en algunos países para poder visitar otros muchos. Habrá que ir mentalizado de que no se pueden ver todos los sitios que querríamos, algunos países del itinerario no se podrán visitar y siempre habrán paisajes, zonas de un país y experiencias que nos perderemos... pero nuestro mayor reto será dedicarle tiempo suficiente a descansar, aunque estemos deseando salir a explorar!
ROUTE: THE GREAT ADVENTURE / RUTA: LA GRAN AVENTURA
Our route will only be an initial plan. Some of the countries are a must, like Moscow. Other countries however, we know they can be left out if we do not have enough time, like Peru, a country we visited a year ago. What we are absolutely certain about is, the journey will have two defined stages.
Dicho esto, nuestra ruta será solo una estimación inicial. Algunos destinos son inamovibles, como es Moscú. Otros países, en cambio, sabemos que puede que se queden fuera en caso de que no dispongamos de tiempo suficiente, como Perú, donde estuvimos hace un año. Lo que sabemos con total seguridad es que este viaje estará formado por dos etapas bien definidas.
1st Stage / 1ª Etapa
The first stage of the journey will start on January 2018, we will fly from Spain to Uruguay. We will visit several countries in South America until we reach Central America. We will visit as much as possible from this part of the world before going to USA, after which we will fly back to Spain in July-August, to be able to get the necessary visas for the second stage.
La primera etapa del viaje comenzará en enero de 2018 volando de España a Uruguay. Visitaremos varios países de Sudamérica hasta llegar a Centro América. Visitaremos todo lo posible de esta parte del mundo antes de subir a EEUU y volaremos a España en Julio-Agosto para poder conseguir los visados necesarios para la segunda etapa.
2nd Stage / 2ª Etapa
The second stage of the journey will start in Moscow, where we will start one of the journeys we've been looking forward to do for a very long time: the famous Trans-siberian Railway route. We will continue through the Trans-Mongolian railway route until we get to China. After that we will visit Nepal and Bhutan. Lucky for us, we were able to visit a big part of Southeast Asia in January and February last year, so we might visit one of the countries we couldn't visit, such as Indonesia, to relax and get the energy we need for the next destination: New Zealand. From here we will fly back to Spain or maybe we'll stay for a short period of time in Australia before going back home at the end of December/beginning of January.
La segunda etapa comenzará en Moscú, desde donde saldremos a uno de los viajes qué más tiempo llevamos queriendo hacer: el famoso Transiberiano. Continuaremos en la red ferroviaria del Transmongoliano hasta llegar a China. Después visitaremos Nepal y Bhután. Como en enero y febrero de este pasado año pudimos visitar gran parte del Sudeste asiático, visitaremos alguno de los países que nos dejamos, como Indonesia, para recargar pilas antes del siguiente destino: Nueva Zelanda. Desde allí volveremos a España o quizás pasemos brevemente por Australia antes de volver a casa a finales de diciembre/ principios de enero
Safety first / La seguridad es lo primero
By the end of this journey we should have visited around 20 countries in total. Therefore it was quite dificult to find an insurance to feel safe in so many countries. Julio took care of this research and found two main companies: IATI, the most popular one, and AVI. We decided to choose AVI because surprisingly was the one with a higher coverage in most of the countries (for example, in case of an accident in USA, AVI covers almost 10 times more than IATI) and it is much cheaper! Hopefully we won't have any incidents during the adventure, but if we do we will let you know our experience with AVI being completely honest. Al final de este viaje habremos visitado unos 20 países en total. Por ello nos resultó muy complicado encontrar un seguro con el que nos sintieramos seguros en tantos países. Julio se encargó de la búsqueda y dio con dos empresas: IATI, la más popular, y AVI. Elegimos AVI porque sorprendentemente fue la que tenía mayor cobertura en la mayoría de países (por ejemplo, en caso de un accidente en EEUU, AVI cubre casi 10 veces más que IATI) y es mucho más barata! Esperemos que no tengamos ingún incidente durante esta aventura, pero si algo ocurre os contaremos nuestra experiencia con AVI siendo totalmente sinceros.
