The first stop in our journey is Uruguay. Due to economic reasons, Montevideo will be our starting point in South America. We take advantage of that and spend 4-6 days in this "little country" before heading to Argentina. We fly on January 10th Seville - Madrid - Montevideo, the long flight is with air europa (probably our worst flight we can remember, Julio claims it wasn't that bad even though he didn't have enough room in his sit!). My parents take us to the airport. My mother keeps asking: "Do you really feel like flying and staying in hostels for months, carrying your backpack? I wouldn't do it even if somebody payed for it!". But we are really excited, they notice that and for once none of us cry when saying goodbye. La primera parada de nuestro gran viaje es Uruguay. Debido a motivos económicos, Montevideo va a ser nuestro punto de entrada a Sudamérica. Aprovecharemos y estaremos unos 5-6 días en ''el paisito'' antes de pasar a Argentina. Volamos el 10 de enero Sevilla - Madrid - Montevideo, el vuelo largo es con Air Europa (probablemente el peor vuelo que recordemos, aunque a Julio no le pareció tan malo, y eso que él ni cabía en el asiento). Mis padres nos llevan al aeropuerto y mi madre no para de preguntar: "De verdad os apetece volar ahora y quedaros en hostales durante meses, cargando con vuestras mochilas? Yo ni aunque me pagasen por ello!". Pero nosotros sí tenemos ganas, muchísimas, ellos se dan cuenta y por una vez ni mi madre ni yo lloramos al despedirnos. MONTEVIDEO

We spend 4 days in Montevideo and go from here by bus to Colonia del Sacramento to spend a day visiting the old town of this famous city. From Colonia del Sacramento we'll go to Buenos Aires through la plata river. We arrive at the airport in Montevideo early in the morning. We take a bus with a crazy driver, and around 9am we leave our stuff at the hotel (sometimes is cheaper a hotel room for two than two beds in a shared room at a hostel) and put our summer clothes on to explore the Uruguayan capital. Vamos a pasar unos 4 días en Montevideo y desde aquí pasaremos en autobús a Colonia del Sacramento, donde estaremos 1 día visitando el casco antiguo de esta famosa localidad. Ya desde Colonia del Sacramento pasaremos a Buenos Aires a través del río de la plata. Nuestro avión aterriza en Montevideo por la mañana temprano. Cogemos un autobús, cuyo conductor parece creer que estar en una carrera de F1, y sobre las 9am dejamos nuestras cosas en el hotel (a veces es más económico una habitación doble de hotel que dos camas en habitación compartida en un hostal) y nos ponemos ropa algo más veraniega para comenzar a explorar la capital uruguaya.

Here is a list of the things you shouldn't miss if you visit Montevideo: Aquí una lista de las cosas que no te puedes perder si vas a Montevideo: Pocitos It is nice to walk along Pocitos beach. The water has a brown color as it belongs to the river La Plata and not to the sea. At the end of the beach you will find a big sign with the name of the city: Montevideo, where everyone is waiting in line to take photos with it. Pocitos is the perfect place to relax after a stressful day. Fun fact: Do you know where the name of the city comes from? As the Spanish conquers arrived to Uruguay they wrote numbers to mark each mountain to know their location. On the mountain of Montevideo they wrote "Monte VI de EO", meaning: Mountain 6th from East to West. Es agradable pasear por la playa de Pocitos. El agua tiene un color marrón ya que pertenece al río de La Plata y no al mar. Al final de la playa encontraréis un rótulo bien grande con el nombre de la ciudad: Montevideo, donde todo el mundo espera en fila para poder hacerse la foto. Pocitos es el lugar perfecto en el que relajarse después de un día de estrés. Dato interesante: Sabías de dónde viene el nombre de la ciudad? Cuando los colonos españoles llegaron a Uruguay marcaron en los mapas cada monte con números para saber su situación geográfica. En el monte de Montevideo escribieron "Monte VI de EO", lo que quiere decir: Monte 6° de Este a Oeste.

Eat Chivito / Comer Chivito This is the most typical food in Uruguay. It is a sandwich prepared with beef steak, cheese, ham, lettuce, tomato with a souce. Definitely worth a try, maybe more than one if you like it as much as we did. Este es el plato típico de Uruguay. El chivito consiste en un sándwich preparado con un filete de ternera, queso, jamón, lechuga, tomate y una salsa. Sin duda merece la pena probarlo, o quizá comerlo más de una vez si te gusta tanto como a nosotros.

Punta Carreta

Nowadays is a nice quarter with a famous shopping center which used to be a prision. From here you can take a Free Walking Tour at 3:30pm (if you don't know what it is: it's a tour where you give the price you consider fair, at the end you pay a tip to the guide). Our guide's name is Jorge, the tour is not only interesting but also amusing. We highly recommend it! In this tour you can even meet a person, Serrana, who can tell you about her first-hand experience in a historical moment in Uruguay. The Tupamaro entered her house and kept her and her mother prisioners during 10 hours while the Tupamaro helped escape hundreds of Tupamaro prisioners from a jail nearby. These prisioners, among which was the expresident Pepe Mujica, escaped through a tunnel connecting the jail and Serrana's home.

Hoy día es un agradable barrio con un famoso centro comercial que en hace mucho tiempo atrás era una prisión. Desde aquí puedes unirte al Free Walking Tour a las 3:30pm (para aquellos que no lo conozcan: consiste en un tour en el que uno mismo pone el precio que considere justo, al finalizar se le paga una propina al guía). El nombre de nuestro guía es Jorge, quien hace que nuestro tour no solo sea interesante sino también divertido. Sin duda lo recomendamos! En el tour incluso puedes conocer a una persona, Serrana, que te contará de primera mano uno de los momentos históricos acontecidos en Uruguay. Los Tupamaro entraron en su casa y les hicieron rehenes a su madre y a ella durante 10h mientras ayudaban a escapar a cientos de presos Tupamaro de la famosa cárcel que estaba justo frente a su casa. Estos presos, entre los que se encontraba el expresidente Pepe Mujica, consiguieron escapar a través de un túnel que conectaba la cárcel con la casa de nuestra querida Serrana.

Rambla

La rambla (or promenade) is the pride of the Uruguayans. It is a beautiful walk by the la Plata river around which the citizens of Montevideo use to relax. Some people ride bicycles, others sit to read, or they might be fishing, no matter what they do they are all carrying their thermo pots in one hand and their mate in the other.

La rambla (o paseo marítimo) es el orgullo de los uruguayos. Se trata de un bonito paseo a orillas del Río de la Plata en el que los habitantes de Montevideo aprovechan para relajarse. Ya sea paseando en bicicleta, leyendo, o pescando. Eso si, siempre con su termo de agua caliente en una mano, y su mate en la otra.

City Center / Centro de la Ciudad

The best way to get to know more about this country is to visit the city center with another Free Walking Tour, and probably the cheapest way too. The itinerary starts at 10:30am everyday (except if it rains, in that case it will be suspended) at the Independence Square, close to the statue of Artigas. The first stop is under the statue, where Artiga's ashes are right now. We walk around the city, Jorge gives us Grapamiel to taste it and explains more about the Uruguayans and their culture. It ends in the Harbor Market, a nice area full of Asadores to eat good meat.

La mejor forma de conocer más sobre este país es visitar el centro de la ciudad con otro Free Walking Tour, y seguramente también es la forma más barata. El itinerario comienza a las 10:30am todos los días (excepto si llueve que se cancela) en la Plaza de Independencia, cerca de la estatua de Artigas. La primera parada es debajo de la estatua, donde se encuentran las cenizas de Artigas en la actualidad. Paseamos por la ciudad, Jorge nos da a probar Grapamiel y nos cuenta más sobre los uruguayos y su cultura. Finaliza en el Mercado del puerto, una zona agradable llena de Asadores para comer buena carne.

Soccer Stadium / Estadio Centenario

This is the epic stadium where the first World Cup took place in 1930, in which Uruguay won against Argentina. If you love football/soccer (like Julio), you shouldn't miss it. You can enter the stadium for a low fee.

Este es el mítico estadio donde tuvo lugar el primer Mundial de la historia en 1930, en el que Uruguay venció en la final a su vecina Argentina. Si eres un enamorado del fútbol (como Julio), no te pierdas este lugar. Por poco dinero podrás acceder a las gradas.

The Andes Museum / El Museo de los Andes

This museum tells the story of 16 Uruguayans who survived an airplane accident in the Andes. They spent 72 days until they were rescued. It is amazing what this Rugby team did without really knowing anything about surviving in the mountain. But the most impressive part of it all is their strength, team spirit and motivation in a situation in which anyone would've lost all hope. It is worth the visit and the entrance costs 200uyu. (The book and movie "Alive" tell their sotry). The owner of the museum is really nice and a is close friend of some of the survivors.

Este museo cuenta la historia de 16 uruguayos que sobrevivieron a un accidente de avión en la cordillera de los Andes. Pasaron 72 días hasta que fueron rescatados. Es increíble lo que hizo este equipo de rugby sin nisiquiera saber nada sobre como sobrevivir en la montaña. Pero la parte más impresionante de todo es su fuerza, el espiritu de equipo y la motivación en una situación en la que cualquiera hubiera perdido toda esperanaza. Es muy recomendable la visita y la entrada cuesta 200uyu. (El libro y la película "Viven" cuentan su historia). Además, el responsable de este museo es una persona muy amable e íntimo amigo de algunos de los supervivientes.

COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO

To get to Colonia del Sacramento we take the bus from Montevideo. It costs 726uyu for both of us and it takes around 3 hours. We get to see some really nice landscapes on the way and mostly cows, lots of cows! By the way, another fun fact: Uruguay has almost 4 times more cows than people.🙃 Para ir a Colonia del Sacramento tomamos un autobús desde Montevideo. Los billetes para nosotros dos cuestan 726uyu y dura alrededor de 3 horas. Las vistas por el camino son muy bonitas, con diferentes pasiajes y sobre todo vemos vacas, muchas vacas! Por cierto, otro dato interesante: Uruguay tiene casi 4 veces más vacas que gente.🙃

Colonia is a small but a very charming city. The old town is very well preserved and it is nice to walk around. It is worth walking up the Light House for only 25uyu per person and sit up there to enjoy the views as long as you wish. At the end of the day there is nothing better than enjoying the sunset from any beach or pier around the city, the views will be great no matter where you are. Colonia del Sacramento es una ciudad pequeñita pero con mucho encanto. El casco antiguo está muy bien conservado y es muy agradable pasear por el. Merece la pena subir al Faro por solo 25uyu por persona y sentarse a disfrutar de las vistas tanto como se quiera. Al final del día no hay nada mejor que disfrutar del atardecer desde cualquiera de las playas o bastiones que hay por la ciudad, las vistas serán preciosas desde cualquiera de ellos.
